Judges Guild Traveller Items

Why was the JG's version of the Gateway sector decanonized? Was it that bad? Were any of their modules any good?

I only recall owning the Tancred one and it didn't seem too bad although it was a merc ticket and I didn't run Traveller games like that and so never used it.

A very select few of the JG products rose to the level of being decent, Tancred being one of them. The rest were pretty much pure drek...

Well I know that JG stuff was not top notch but I picked up a small stack of JG traveller stuff on eBay about a month back.

Yes I paid too much, no I'll never use it in a game, but it was a great shot of nostalgia.

I bought Amycus Probe and a couple of others just for sentimentality sake, when I saw a few old D&D modules we used to game with.

Their Starbases product was half-decent mapping-wise. I think I used portions of the base write-up for use with world info years back.

I have a load of the JG stuff from way back, and always wondered why! Most were pretty substandard even by the early eighties standards.

However I've got to say, we did use the Traveller logbook background tables for players short on imagination and the ships papers were fairly decent.

In addition the adventure module 'Doom of the Singing Star' had large deckplans of an interstellar cruise ship, that saw lots of use as various ships and buildings. Admittedly the paper was poor quality and the enclosed adventures were poor, but they were large plans and one scenario gave us a short Striker campaign from its premise of rescuing downed liner passengers.

Generally though, impressions weren't favourable overall.

Dra'k'ne Station was damned inspirational despite its flaws (flimsy paper, dungeon-like deckplans, and no real plotline). After adding personal tweaks, it became a major element to a whole campaign.

Not bad for a $5 module.

Overall, JG's Traveller products were a bit weak. Their stuff for D&D though, was much better (Cavern's of Thracia, Dark Tower, CSotIO, CSotWE, etc).

As boxy as many of the plans are, I'm a fan of Starships & Spacecraft.

Marc loves that thing. Me I'm meh on it. It's definitely one of their better products, but that's not saying much.

A good rule of thumb on the JG Travellr stuff is if it's done by Sering, it's probably ok.

BTW just as a note, I own the rights to all of the old JG sci-fi stuff ;)

Yeah they did have some good D&D stuff, though the artwork was usually pretty weak except for Seimbeda's and Jaquay's material.

The Sectors were actually quite comparable to sectors released by GDW...

Early editions of Supp 3 had NO sector map, and about a paragraph per subsector of information.

The 4 JG sectors had the same level of data, and a sector map (showing only routes, locations, names, and borders). Rather than several pages of overview history, they instead included a page or two, and 2-3 pages of various encounter tables. Also, being full sized, they were easier to read.

The poor quality of the physical material, and the low price, were not impediments, when GDW had 2 sectors, at opposite ends of the Imperium, while JG gave you a whole domain.

As to their other "supplements"... Logbook was quite useful, for the expansions to Char Gen, if nothing else... the Character sheets were nice, too.

As to their adventures.... I never bought any, so I couldn't say...

Judges Guild!?

For judges guild stuff My favorite module was "Doom of the singing star" Not only did you get a massive starship to adventure in but you got 11 scenarios (and hundreds of adventures) For $11 dollars I got years of sessions out of "Doom of the singing star" .I use "Fifty starbases" as starport maps (Need a startown tear it out of the book) The "simba safari" was useful because it gave you safari ship deckplans, then you could flip the map and have an alien instalation for your characters to explore.....And oh, yes, I have the judges guild Gm screen for classic traveller(at the time it was THE ONLY GM SCREEN on the market for traveller).... Iv'e gotten a lot of use out of judges guild products.....Iv'e no complaints........

Yah, i've got two copies of the green screen, love it.

And 3 copies of fifty starbases. I still use those degree charts, and the spaceports.

Bought them all way back when they first came out, and then more, much recently of other things...

Many JG things can be had in lots on Ebay, DIRT cheap. Some guy is selling them in huge lots to stores to re-sell, except...he sells them cheaper than any store could use and still profit at.

I figure, old school, CT, some good ideas in there dirt cheap = good deal.

I still have a fair bit of stock of the material myself. Once I get the server moved I'll probably start making it available for sale again.

Although I wasn't to keen on the JG adventures, some of the supporting material was good, such as "The Traveller Logbook".

Speaking of old stuff, anyone remember the old FASA Traveller stuff. The various ship deck plans were quite good. I still have a bunch of the deck plans, but I seemed to have lost the little books that came with them that had the ship stats. Anyone know if someone might have uploaded them somewhere? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Some of the JG adventures weren't bad, Tancred pretty good-but I used corsairs instead of mercs. Simba Safari & Doom of the Singing Star had nice ships & the Singing Star plans moonlighted as a hotel in several of my games such as the the main hotel on St. Foy. I agree that their D&D & Runequest stuff were better done. However, at the time, JG was producing modules for a lot of games that didn't produce any at the time.

I still have the "Adventure Class Ships" by FASA, still in the box, but the box is a bit worse for wear. LOTS of deck planes for small ships (under 3000 tons) with several designs for freighters and liners that I used as other ships for adventuring (the players were never quite rich enough to own one of those). It had some nice Aslan designs in it as well.

Starport Hotel was another good one, lots of deck plans that could be reused and recombined for various facilities.

Personally, I liked most of FASA's stuff.

:( Once uppon a time I owned all of the FASA deck plans. Every last one of them. She who is now my ex constantly complained about the amount of space taken up with all my gaming stuff. Since I couldn't find any Traveller players in my area, I finally agreed to sell off Traveller and several other games as well. Just to add insult to injury, I sold this at a gaming swap meet held at my FLGS. The money I made selling this stuff just covered the parking ticket I got while I was in selling it. :nonono:

The worst part is, she took up more room that the Traveller stuff did.
