Honors Check

Frewfrux

SOC-12
Forgive me if this is not the place to ask this (in such a case please redirect me), but I was wondering if the honors check was once period, or once per degree?

For example, a character going for a PhD will first get a BA, then an MA, and then their PhD. Can they make an honors check 3 times, or just once for their entire career?

(NOTE: I am assuming a character does each degree at a different institution, if that makes a difference.)

I'm mostly wondering because something I read seemed to indicate that the honors roll was for "college or university," but to say it's for university could mean any of three degrees. That got me wondering if it was once per degree, or once for everything.

It would be more advantageous (in my mind) to use this for your Masters or PhD just because you're bumping up smaller numbers that way.

The rules seem to allow an Honors roll for any type of Higher Education, from Collage to Law School.

Sure, but how many times can you roll for it? The errata states:

Page 39, C Pre-Career Education and Training, The Educational Process (correction): The following section should be added after Graduation.
Honors. A character can optionally make one additional Pass/Fail Roll: success confers Honors and one level from the Major. Failure has no effect.

Does that mean you can roll once after every time you graduate?

eg. Roll once after getting a BA, once after getting an MA, and once after getting a PhD?

I can't see that that changes anything. The section "The Educational Process" applies to all Educational steps, not just Higher Education. The table on p40 seems to restrict Honors to the steps in Higher Education.

As far as I can see you can roll for Honors in each step of Higher Education; so all of College/Uni/Academy, Masters, "Professors", Medical School, and Law School.

It also seems reasonable that you can earn distinction in each school.

Okay, that's what I thought too, but the example on page 41 has the honors check after the character applies for the next step. So, they graduate college, apply to flight school, and *then* check for honors. It seemed a bit out of order so I thought I'd ask for clarification in a different way to make sure it was clear.

Thank you :)

Thank you :)
Happy to help!

Not quite, even if it's a bit obfuscated:
Human character Eneri Dinsha 9AB56A can improve his Education before he starts a career.
He decides on College of Regina because he meets the prerequisite of Edu-5+. ...
Eneri volunteers for NOTC and is automatically accepted. Check Edu (roll 6 or less; he rolls 6) and succeeds. He may select a skill labelled Ship Skills. He chooses Pilot.
He inquires about Flight School but they tell him he needs an Honors BA. Eneri applies for the Honors program. Check Edu (roll 6 or less; he rolls 9) and fails. He applies for Waiver (Check Soc; roll 10 or less, Mod -4 for the previous attempts: he rolls 11) and is firmly rejected.
With four years of College completed, he graduates with a BA and Edu increased to Edu-8.
He applies for Honours before graduation, after looking at what would be required for Flight School, should he desire to apply there later.

Here's the quote from the example:

He inquires about Flight School but they tell him he needs an Honors BA. Eneri applies for the Honors program.

So, he rolls for skill acquisition in the NOTC course before applying for honors....hang on....

Wait...is the NOTC and OTC program part of the College program? I *just* noticed that the duration for these are "simul." (If that's the case, I think it's more than just a bit obfuscated.)

Search the forums for Hemdian's flowcharts for character generation. They're very well done with few errors and show all the edu details, including roll for Honors.
