Just a quick question to all you heretics out there:

The standard mapping structure is sectors = 4 x 4 subsectors, and subsectors = 8 x 10 hexes. Apart from 3d universes, what other sizes do people use? (For example, do you use sectors = 5 x 5 subsectors, and subsectors = 10 x 10 hexes?)

Someone on these boards had done a hex grid - I mean a hex of hexes for a Hiver map. It was pretty cool, but definitely alien (the hex references were by radius and arc). Try searching for "hex map hiver"?
 
OK, "hex" and "map" don't work as search terms because they're too short! :mad: I'll keep looking for the thread, Hemdian.

And, who says that Vilani don't use square paper? It would have the advantage of going into the printer any which way. ;)

About a year ago, I started a thread about this topic. Alternate Maps

Personally I used 10x10 because it was square and "felt" right for a space map.

I also thought about 8x8 for Aslan and the True Hex map for the Hivers.

Ah, you jest, friend Alik; yet such a stockpile would indeed be superfluous. A healthy respect for the merits of hex mapping is one of the first things a good (i.e. alive and healthy) Scout learns in the IISS! I simply wonder what benefit (if any) a 5x5 or 10x10 (decimal) system might have over traditional Grand Survey formats?

I know you said 'apart from 3D universes', but mine is a 3D universe mapped in layers. I use a hexagonal slab subsector 15 hexes across and 6 hexes thick. The sector uses the same map format on a larger scale, and the process can be scaled up indefinitely.
Just in case you're interested.
 
I'm working on a 3D system with Cartesian co-ordinates. The "entertaining" part is figuring what the jump range should be so that viable jump routes open up at various TL thresholds.

Did I mention that there's no jumping into "empty" hexes (although some deep space locations have jump nexi)

This *really* limits the utility of ships with minimal jump drives, and leads to "jump ferries" to move starships from one "main" to another.

Needless to say I'm still working out the bugs...

My friend has mapped out a sphere based the real life stars 10,000 light years and used Traveller data to generate worlds, histories trade and jump routes plugged into a mega database and had the point of origin to be "Out There"...to use the Classic Battlestar Galactic phrase...all these things exist in relation to each other depending how you look at it. He will be adapting it for a commercial product that will resemble Google Maps...herectical enough for ye?

If your friend has an accurate list of stars out to 10,000 lyrs, I'd like to see it. Especially if it includes all those main sequence M-stars, or even K and G-stars.
