Hello Folks,
I'm starting to work on making some TL 10 warship designs for my Lunion Subsector Navy. I'm using an option in Thomas Bont's software that specifies that the ship has three shifts (thus increasing the number of crewmen aboard the ship for operations). The idea here is to exchange ship ideas and for me to steal them from you
for my own campaign use. What follows is what I call the Nettle Class Destroyer Escort. It is designed to be a pain
1,000-ton Destroyer Escort-class , Nettles (TL10)
The Nettle Destroyer Escorts are assigned hull numbers rather than given actual names. The Nettle's design specs came into existence as a result of the Admiralty's demand that Colonial Ships be capable of keeping up with its Jump 4 pace of operations. While the Nettle is of recent design at the Lunion Shipyards, many of the sailors aboard ships of her class classify the Nettle as being "obsolete" and an unthinking adherence to Imperial naval demands. There is a strong resentment amongst crewmembers who believe that a Destroyer Escort's primary purpose is to provide roving sensor platforms as well as seek out enemy forces in normal space. While faster than a merchant ship, the Nettle class ship needs a serious upgrade in her capabilities. There is talk amongst the sub-sector commanders of refitting the Nettle class with both vectored and non-vectored engines. This would bring the ship's pursuit speed up from 2 G's to something closer to 2.4 G's. Her Lateral thrust ability would however drop from 2 G's to 1.0 G. Some of the commanders of such ships believe that this is an acceptable performance hit while still maintaining the ship's ability to pursue hostiles. Note: This version of the Nettle Class Destroyer Escort is fitted with Heavy Laser cannons. Ship commanders are permitted to swap out from Heavy Laser Cannons to the more "standardized" laser weaponry found throughout the Imperium. The advantage to using the lesser powered laser weapons is that they are easier to maintain and if one (of three) in a turret is down due to mechanical failure, the entire turret is not rendered inoperative.
