God-Emperor of Capital?

Many things are done in the Emperors name. Ships are commissioned, fifes are granted, lives are ended, sentences are commuted, wars are begun and ended, money is coined, trade is initiated and protected, curses are laid, blessings are bestowed and any other activity you might imagine that happens in the vastness of the Imperium will often be done in his name
The visage of the Emperor looks down from countless imperial offices; He is said to represent the Imperium, "taking the Emperors credit" when a marine or starman signs up for service.
To many low TL/Primitive cultures this may seem like a form of Deism. Now I am NOT talking about WHmr. 40K and the Psychic god-emperor, but I am talking about the Ruler of 11,000 worlds, trillions of sophonts and 1000 years of tradition and history. This usually rated minor god hood in many pre-spaceflight societies on Earth. Then there is the celebrity adoration, which according to recent sociobiology theory, may be genetically coded into humans. Just look at all the attention paid to the British Royal Family in our present day, add to that the nigh canonization of Princess Diana and I think that Travellers would, on occasion, run into the Emperor God in their perambulations. Throw in a Devil who lives in jump space and you got a duality. Add the angels of the Navy and Scouts who protect those who travel in the cold dark of space .
The holy trinity of Emperor, Nobility, Common Man? Or rather, Emperor, Moot and Navy?

Cool idea...

IMTU the imperium is quite distant from the lives of individual citizens. Only the one percent or so of interstellar travellers have any real regular contact with it, outside of those in the civil service, or millitary. Sort of like the UN today... Most people just don't deal with it. They hear about it... In the news but usually about things that are not here and now.

I had not thought of dumping a big load of celebrity worship on top of it. By weight of name recognition alone the emperor is very powerful, even if his politics is not well liked.

Deification by media exposure... Hmmm. Imagine how well guarded the emperor's image must be. Legions of spin doctors and PR agents ready to strike to guard the myth of the emperor.

Who runs the emperor's focus groups? Given the time-lag in the imperium, how does one tailor ones message to each world.

I can understand limiting official x-boat links to J-4, A second J-6 service would be needed to stay ahead of the message front. If officials got the message before the public then they would have time to craft a response to the message, containing the effect of the message.

Rumours can be disaster to an empire.

Father Fletch, a scholar and a gentleman always!
a fellow of TNe persuasion (on TNE-lists), Peter "Black Dawn" Gray has this article you might of interest that I copied down from a previous post here under "Religions" by R_Kane some days ago.

Peter "Black Dawn" Gray's article
http://www.downport.com/bard/bard/gail/gail4021.html should be of use to you sir!

Deism of the Emperor on the Low tech worlds that "accept the Imperium" (ie, are not Interdicted as too low tech for contact), and the hero-worship of the nobility (or "fandom? of the Emperor (like paparazzi, and those who buy the tabloids), would be an everyday gossip column in TNS and planetary news outlets...
("The Emperor's new clothes..." "E's new mistress..." etc etal ad nauseum).

But the reverential belief system in the Emperor/ nobility, is heart and soul of the Imperium. ( we need only look back to the rebellion to see the impact removing those cornerstones had).
heretically yours,

Non-monotheistic, non-atheistic Imperials can easily consider the Emperor as a deity, especially if they are already polytheistic. If they already worship many gods, they are likely quite willing to add another - especially a 'god' who can bring life to worlds and destroy them; who can order new races and intelligent specices created; who can command men and machines hundreds of lightyears away; who seems to have unlimited wealth and power; who - if the Imperial culture allows it - can live for hundreds of years with anagathics and careful use of low berth tech.

(Note that most Traveller universes restrict Noble use of anti-aging technology: mainly to allow new blood to come to power, and to avoid a revolt among younger nobles.)

Atheistic Imperials are unlikely to explicitly worship the Emperor: however, they may implicitly treat him as a god, at the same level of Stalin, Mao, etc. A religion may not have ceremonial trappings, yet be a religion all the same.

Like Atheists, Monotheistic Imperials will not directly worship a man - but they can implicitly treat him as a godling. If the Emperor is considered, say, "the first Warrior-Priest of God", say, or a High Prophet, he can try to steal much of God's glory as his own.

***************

Note that there will be those monotheists who will resent and loathe the Emperor, should he take on the trappings of deity. They can be suppressed, but you can get an ever more expensive/destructive cycle of suppression - resistance - more suppression - more resistance. Far more dangerous than the military power of the resistance is the power of their ideals, especially resistance to lawlessness and tyranny (often grounded in their faith in a God other than the Emperor).

If people develop a widespread contempt for the abuse of Imperial power and sneer at Imperial justice, the social foundations of Imperial society will corrode quickly. If the Emperor's reputation is destroyed, his authority - his ability to command people, and their willingness to obey - will vanish like a mist.

A smart countermove is to keep the Imperial government distant, and their power rarely used and tightly focused. Few people will be angry over a mere customs and mutual defense union, for example, especially if it does not interfere with their lives, culture, or property. "Resist the Emperor? What harm did he ever do me?" And if the Emperor can show that he is *protecting* his people and their property, his authority is strengthened.

The smartest move is to avoid overblown claims of deity in the first place. "I am just a ordinary man, doing a job" plays well to the crowd, and effectively neutralizes the threat of widespread, religiously driven resistance to Imperial authority.

"I don't need your worship: just send your tax monies, obey the High Laws, and respect my soldiers and agents." No delusions of grandeur: just a nice, steady flow of cash, and a peaceful government. One of the keys of power is simply knowing when to stop demanding more: when you get what you need, don't get greedy and pushy, making enemies when you don't need to.
