Gateway Sec files.

I have been looking for .sec files or .wbs or .hes files. Solomani Rim War period. The set i have won't run in Heaven and Earth. (At least when I try to run the entire sector.) I thought it could have been me but the Spinward Marches sec files I ran worked fine as did Deneb. I just can't seem to get any of the Gateway Domain ones to work. :( Anyone have a set or a link to a set?

Try this (link). Load Sector | Standard Sector Files (.sec).

HTH.
</font>
Thanks Casey. But those are the sec files I have and the ones that cause H&E to crash. :(

Okay. Well I'm running H&E 1.04 and tried it right before posting with a fresh download of the .sec files and they didn't work as Galactic Sector files, only Standard (HIWG?) ones. <shrugs> H&E's good but it gets flakey at times. Partially why I use Galactic more for the things Galactic does.

I've found that exiting out of the program then restarting it usually helps. Usually H&E only runs for so long before crashing for me. :( Sounds like you might want to put a fresh install of H&E in a seperate folder and try it with that install.

Same version I have. I am trying to get it to genreate the sector, maps and all, so I don't have to mess with it when it comes time to actually GM the game. Just preprint the stuff I am likely to need. DOing it that way also means it should stay consistent. THe reason i like H&E is because it does everything from the top down. One piece of software and everything is done. Takes a few hours to do the entire sector but only has to do that once.

Bhoins,

The H&E 2.0 beta is vastly more stable than H&E 1.x (any version). The Sector Module is 90% done, and fully usable for browsing through worlds, organizing a sector, etc. The Galaxy Module (for managing sectors, is also 90-95% done, and usaable. The System Module, which will be the core of world design, isn't done yet (as I've gone over in many places, Book 6's steps 10 and 11 wind up being impossible to execute without human fudging of the given rules. . . at least so far), and has only limited functions. Still, I'd advise going to: Heaven & Earth Mailing List, and requesting membership from the list admit (the software author, Stuart Ferris). Admission time can be . . . variable . . . so patience can be a virtue while waiting.

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention. It requires the download and installation of the MS .Net Framework; which, for me, was no trouble at all.

Well I just finished generating details for one of the sectors in the Domain. Took about 10 hours and H&E is one massive resource hog. It seems like the problem is H&E not the .sec files. I'd recommend generating a subsector at a time, as a test if nothing else. Again, it can't hurt to get a fresh download of H&E and the sector files and try them in a new folder.

As for H&E 2.0 beta it sounds like it doesn't yet generate the system & world detail Bhoins is looking for and I have to wonder why I'd have to install the .Net framework just to use the program. That's a deal breaker for me even considering joining the beta group.

I was cleaning out my download folder and found another set of sec files for gateway circa 990. They are running fine. (So far, knock on laminated wood.
)
I have no clue where they came from though, but they appear to cover the same planets and ground. I guess I'll have to print maps and see.

Have you guys tried the ones available from my downloads page?

They are in traditional *.sec format, so in theory, they should load and run correctly.

Please let me know if there are any problems,
Flynn
Those appear to be the same as the ones that Heaven and Earth has been choking on. I even tried it under 1.0.8 and hit the same snag. When it tries to save one of the first three systems it crashes.

Weird, if they're the same as the file that does work... it might be something involving carriage returns and line feeds, but who really knows for certain?

Anyway, thought it would help, but it apparently didn't. Sorry about that. Best of luck for you!

Take care,
Flynn

There is a text file in the H&E folder which confirms what needs to be done to make UWP & SEC compatible with the software. Here is the contents:-

</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">NOTES ON UWP & SEC FILE FORMATS

The program allows the user to import TrTools Sector Files (*.UWP) and Standard Sector Files (*.SEC) which are freely available on the internet.

However, in order that the program can understand the files they must be converted into MS-DOS Text format. This can be done by using Wordpad or any other text editor and selecting the MS-DOS Text file format when saving the file.

If the file is not converted WBD will reject the file after it is loaded.</pre>
Hope that clarifies things.

Hope that clarifies things.
Hello Stuart,
Excellent work with H&E. Thansk for all the work.

The problem comes up when it is saving the system after generating it when doing either a full sector or subsector. Usually in the first 2-5 systems. One sec file I have gave me no problems whatsoever and the .sec files that Flynn has have that problem constantly. I was using 1.0.4 now I am messing with 1.0.8. Same problem but I did find a collection of .sec files for gateway in the appropiate timeframe so I am in good shape. Not sure if they are the same numbers as in my Gateway Book but they are definitely close enough that I am not going to worry about it.

I just joined your mail list and was considering H&E 2.0 but the big thing I want it for is the system details and planetary maps, which from reading things isn't ready in 2.0 yet. :( I anxiously await that module.

Again great work and thanks for such an excellent piece of software.
