Flashback Discussion

I was looking at my copy of COACC for Megatraveller and found an advertisement for Flashback. I know that this product was planned but never executed. However, I think that this is a very interesting idea for traveller. I have often considered running a historical traveller campaign but have found the rules lacking in this area. I would like to start a discussion on this topic. Maybe shoot some ideas around with some of the bright people on here to devise a system. Any Ideas anyone?

There are several "historical" traveller settings available. You can take any of these settings and fit them in to your Traveller ruleset.

Personally, I'm looking at an alteration of the Interstellar Wars setting for T20.

GURPS Interstellar Wars - Imperial Year -2285(ish)
MegaTraveller Mileu 0 - Imperial Year 0 (EDIT: nope, sorry - that's T4)
T20 Gateway - Imperial Year 993
Classic Traveller - Imperial Year 1111
Rebellion Era - Imperial Year 1120
Hard Times - Imperial Year ???? (after 1120, before TNE Virus)
TNE - Year 1240

I think someone also posted on coverting UWPs backward in the Scout section a while ago ... found it!

The rules themselves wouldn't be the hard part - use a rule set you know well and like, and that's that.

The setting would be a lot more work, but in some ways it's easier to work backward.

If you have 'current' info on the setting area, it's a bit easier to wind it back in time. And you can still get a sense of wonder that way - if you told a resident of New Amsterdam that the city would one day rival London as a world city, they'd have laughed at you.

Thanks for starting this topic! I remember Flashback as one of the products that I was really looking forward to, but never materialized.

By "rules" do you mean rules to convert UWP data backwards as Valarian mentions? I think the original concept was to go into each major historical era:

</font>
  • Interstellar Wars</font>
  • Long Night</font>
  • Year 0</font>
  • Civil War</font>
  • Classic Traveller</font>
  • Rebellion/TNE</font>
But there are plenty of other ideas that need to be fleshed out as well. Are the adventurers slowly dying, or are they part a club that travels forward in time? In other words, what is the Push/Pull?

Update - Earlier thread on this from January here. Also includes this link that is well worth reading.

Imperial Year 1125 until the Virus' release in 1130 (IIRC); I'm working (among many other things) on a setting based on what would've become of the Hard Times if the Virus was never released.

Jim and Sigg,

Exactly what I was looking to do...I have some ideas and would like to debate it a bit. Interstellar Wars is covered in the Gurps book so I'm not too worried about that! Rule of Man is a period that interests me...mostly how it being referred to as the "Ramshackle Empire" reflected in UWP stats. My thought was adapting MT "Hard Times" to that somehow.

Next time period that interests me is the slow slide into the Long Night...which I would think that the TNE UWP devolution rules would be able to be adapted to that but would have to include some rules for recovery and beginning of new Pocket Empires.

Year 0 is covered pretty accurately by Milleu 0 as far as I can tell...but would be open to any suggestions.

The Civil War period would be covered by Hard Times in my opinion because wouldn't be the same situation as MT Rebellion era ?

Classic Traveller....say no more...pretty well developed!!

MT Rebellion Era/Hard Times....again pretty well developed!!!

TNE period...covered by GDW books up to about 1203....looking forward to the TNE 1248 Milleu book though.

Any Thoughts?
