First Interstellar Republic

A popular revolution in Year 10 seizes the infant Third Imperium still embued with the notions of grandeur that the Imperium symbolized, the masses rise up and dispose of the aristocracy and proclaim a Republic instead of an Empire. Now like the Hussites of old they launch into Chartered Space with a messianic mission restore an equitable and ethical state for all sophonts. Has anyone tried this one?
 
Sounds like the RC in Milieu Zero instead of in TNE, with an added oder of the French/American Revolutions and, maybe, of Napoleon-style emperors rather than of Ceaser-style emperors... I like that
 
I had toyed with the idea of building a French Republic in Milieu 0, as a Pocket Empire but reading about the Hussites make me think that what if the whole thing could be done differently. An ideological charge like the restoration of Light against the Dark of the Long Night. But, imagine a crowd of enthuastic levellers trampling and freeing entire regions with the aim of creating a Republic.

The problem that I have with RC analogy is that too much of the RC was emphising Smash & Grab, whereas, a quasi Hussite Revolt would be against the whole old order by ushering in something new.
 
My impression about the RC is that it was far more of an imperialistic state than a revolutionary government, overthrowing tyrants to put the RC (or pro-RC puppets) in power intheir stead, instead of truely liberating the people.

Are you talking about something similar to the Spartacus revolt against the Roman Republic, a revolution of slaves who fought for the liberation of all slaves and for the creation of a society in which all would be freemen. They were crushed by the Romans eventually; but their heroism was remarkable, and they actually had chances of winning.
 
Isn't the problem with having a Republic is the time lag that would make elections all but impossible? You'd have to do something similar to what Star Wars has - a galactic congress made up of representatives from member planets, lead by a chancellor of sorts. Who probably gets voted in via the representatives rather than be popularly elected by the vast masses.

And doesn't this also conflict with the Imperium's devil may care attitude to the autonomous planets in its territories? The Emperor doesn't care if a single system is a corporate-owned world, a theocratic oligarchy or a bureacratic mess, so long as they all pay lip service to his august throne...

Or something. I'd be interested in how you'd pull it off though.
 
I'm thinking of this Republic as something VERY federalist - i.e. the basic interstellar governmental unit being at the subsector (Council of Planets' Delegates), having the largest amount of power, with an "Assembly" on Capital composed of representatives elected by these Councils (every ten years), one per Subsector. Most administration would go on the Subsector/Sector level, with the central governments being quite a loose federal body.

Planets will, in general worlds be democracies, i.e. every planet will have an elected Council of its own, but the actual function of these Councils would vary greatly, depending on the level of corruption and on the amount of energy devoted by the masses to keeping tabs on their government. So governments could be GOV-1 (corporations control the representatives by bribes and thus do what they want) GOV-2 (small population, everyone takes part in the Council), GOV-3 (the population doesn't give much of a damn for the government, the government doesn't get so much in their way, so the same people stay in power for long terms. VERY long terms), GOV-4 (the "default"), GOV-6 (administered by another world, usually after a BIG scandal in the "colony"'s scandal), GOV-7 (over-sectarianism leads to several Planetary Councils instead of one), GOV-8 (usually high-pop with a moderate popular disinterest in politics; the council does nothing, but the administration operates independantly) or GOV-9 (as GOV-8, but with far more corruption and far less efficiency). The other government types will be the rare exceptions, usually when something BAD happens, i.e. a coup.

When it comes around to making policy, it could adopt actually, a Confederal approach, in which local assembies would dictate policies to higher bodies. Coordination becomes a problem but the overall rule by consensus and cooperation as part of its ethos could go a long way in eliminating that problem. Furthermore, elections could be held every 10 years to a nominative body that sets out the general principles and leaves the running of planets to the planets themselves. Also, remember, this is Milieu 0, the Imperium is not all that large, as it grows so would the complexity of governing but that could be mittigated by allowing Sectors to be highest governing unit and anything above that would rely upon principles of governance.

I like the idea of the Spartacus Rebellion but as I said earlier I place it with the Hussite Rebellions as that actually involved a territorial base and was quite stable for a period of time.

Could you give me details about the Hussite rebellion? My memory is somewhat hazy on that specific event.

But overall, I love your Confederative approah (what is the difference between Federative and Confedertive approaches?) - I'll probably use a similar approach for MTU's Serpentis Community (which is a decentralized democracy) as well as to my Hard Times/TNE OTU-variant polity.
 
In Confederations, local units make decisions that are adopted by consensus across the wider polity. In Federations, those powers are shared between a Central authority and a Local authority each deciding which durisdictions are their own or shared.

About the Hussites...

The Taborites (Czech Táborité, singular Táborita) were members of a religious proto-Protestant community centered on the Bohemian city of Tábor during the Hussite Wars in the 15th century.

Economically supported by their control of local gold mines, the citizens joined local peasants to develop a communist-like society. They announced the Millennium of Christ and declared there would be no more servants and masters. They promised people would return to a state of pristine innocence.

Taborite theology represented one of the most radical departures from that of the hierarchical medieval church. They rejected the outer veneer of the corrupted church and insisted on the normativeness of biblical authority. Even though Taborite theologians were versed in scholastic theology, they were among the first intellectuals to break free from centuries-long scholastic captivity.

The Taborites were particularly zealous in their religious practices and, like other such sects, believed it was their duty to slay all heretics, i.e., non-Taborites. They supported a communist-like economy, sharing all food and valuable supplies, but maintained their private property and land rights. They also rejected marriage and held women "in common."

Some of the most outstanding Taborite theologians were Mikulas Biskupec of Pelhrimov and Prokop Veliký (who died in the Battle of Lipany). The early radical theological ideas of Taborites were represented by Petr Kanis and Martin Huska.

Tabor's army was led by Jan Žižka, the blind Bohemian general who commanded his rag-tag army in defiance of the Imperial Army under Emperor Sigismund.

The power of the community was broken, after twenty years, with the Battle of Lipany on May 30, 1434. 13,000 of the 18,000-strong army were killed. In 1437 they signed a treaty with Czech king Sigismund.

Even though the Taborites ceased to play an important political role, their theological thinking strongly influenced the foundation and rise of the Unity of the Brethren (Unitas Fratrum) in 1457.

Effect in Bohemia of the Death of Hus
The arrest of Hus in 1414 had excited considerable resentment in Bohemia and Moravia. In both countries the estates appealed repeatedly and urgently to Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor to release Hus.

On the arrival of the news of his death at the Council of Constance in 1415, disturbances broke out which were directed at first against the clergy, especially against the monks. Even the archbishop saved himself with difficulty from the rage of the populace. In the country conditions were not much better.

Everywhere the treatment of Hus was felt as a disgrace inflicted upon the whole country, and his death was looked upon as a criminal act. King Wenceslaus, prompted by his grudge against Sigismund, at first gave free vent to his indignation at the course of events in Constance; and his wife openly favored the friends of Hus. Pronounced Hussites stood at the head of the government. A league was formed by certain lords who pledged themselves to protect the free preaching of the Gospel upon all their possessions and estates, and to obey the power of the bishops only in case their orders accorded with the injunctions of the Bible.

In disputed points the decision of the university should be resorted to. The entire Hussite nobility joined the league, and if the king had entered it, its resolutions would have received the sanction of the law; but he refused, and approached the Roman Catholic League of lords, which was now formed, the members pledging themselves to cling to the king, the Roman Church, and the Council. Signs of the outbreak of a civil war began to show. Pope Martin V, who, while still Cardinal Otto of Colonna, had attacked Hus with relentless severity, energetically resumed the battle against Hus's teaching after the enactments of the Council of Constance. He intended to eradicate completely the doctrine of Hus. For this purpose the co-operation of King Wenceslaus had to be obtained. In 1418 Sigismund succeeded in winning his brother over to the standpoint of the council by pointing out the inevitability of a religious war if the heretics in Bohemia found further protection. Hussite statesmen and army leaders had to leave the country, and Roman priests were reinstituted. These measures caused a general commotion which hastened the death of Wenceslaus by a paralytic stroke in 1419. His heir was Sigismund.

Two Parties in Bohemia
Hussism had organized itself during the years 1415-1419. From the beginning two parties were found: the closer adherents of Hus clung to his standpoint, leaving the whole hierarchical and liturgical order of the Church untouched; the radical party identified itself more boldly with the doctrines of John Wyclif, shared his passionate hatred of the monastic clergy, and, like him, attempted to lead the Church back to its supposed condition during the time of the apostles, which necessitated the removal of the existing hierarchy and the secularization of ecclesiastical possessions. The radicals among the Hussites sought to translate their theories into reality; they preached the sufficientia legis Christi-- that only the divine law (i.e., the Bible) is the rule and canon for man, and that not only in ecclesiastical matters, but also in political and civil matters. They rejected therefore, as early as 1416, everything that they believed had no basis in the Bible, such as the veneration of saints and images, fasts, superfluous holidays, the oath, intercession for the dead, auricular confession, indulgences, the sacraments of Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick; they admitted laymen and women to the preacher's office, and chose their own priests. But before everything they clung to Wyclif's doctrine of the Lord's Supper, denying transubstantiation, and this is the principal point by which they are distinguished from the moderate party.

The Four Articles of Prague
The program of the more conservative Hussites is contained in the four articles of Prague, which were agreed upon in July, 1420, and promulgated in the Latin, Czech, and German languages:

Freedom to preach the Word of God.
Celebration of the Lord's Supper in both kinds (bread and wine to priests and laity alike).
No profane power for the clergy.
The same law for laity and priests.

Calixtines or Utraquists, and Taborites
The views of the moderate Hussites were represented at the university and among the citizens of Prague; therefore they were called the Prague party; they were also called Calixtines or Utraquists, because they emphasized the second article, and the chalice became their emblem. The radicals had their gathering-place in the small town of Usti, on the river Luznice, south of Prague. But as the place was not defensible, they founded a city upon a neighboring hill, which they named Tábor (after the traditional name of the mountain on which Jesus was expected to return; see Mark 13); hence they were called Taborites. They comprised the essential force of Hussism. Their aim was to destroy the enemies of the law of God, and to extend his kingdom by the sword. For the latter purpose they waged bloody wars, for the former purpose they established a strict jurisdiction, inflicting the severest punishment not only upon heinous crimes like murder and adultery, but also upon faults like perjury and usury, and tried to apply the conditions required in the law of God to the social relations of the world.

The Hussite Wars
The news of the death of King Wenceslaus produced the greatest commotion among the people of Prague. A revolution swept over the country; churches and monasteries were destroyed, and the ecclesiastical possessions were seized by the Hussite nobility. Sigismund could get possession of his kingdom only by force of arms. Pope Martin V called upon all Christians of the Occident to take up arms against the Hussites, and there followed twelve years of warfare. The Hussites initially campaigned defensively, but after 1427 they assumed the offensive. Apart from their religious aims, they fought for the national interests of the Czechs. The moderate and radical parties were united and they not only repelled the attacks of the army of crusaders, but entered the neighboring countries.

In 1430, Joan of Arc dictated a letter on March 23 that threatened to lead a crusading army against the Hussites unless they returned to the Catholic Faith; but her capture by English and Burgundian troops two months later would keep her from carrying out this threat.

The Council of Basel and Compacta of Prague
Eventually the opponents of the Hussites found themselves forced to consider an amicable settlement. They invited a Bohemian embassy to appear at the Council of Basel. The discussions began on January 10, 1432, centering chiefly in the four articles of Prague. No agreement emerged. After repeated negotiations between the Basel Council and Bohemia, a Bohemian-Moravian state assembly in Prague accepted the Compacta of Prague on November 30, 1433. The agreement granted communion in both kinds to all who desired it, but with the understanding that Christ was entirely present in each kind. Free preaching was granted conditionally: the Church hierarchy had to approve and place priests, and the power of the bishop must be considered. The article which prohibited the secular power of the clergy was almost reversed.

The Taborites refused to conform, and the Calixtines united with the Roman Catholics and destroyed the Taborites in a battle near Lipany (May 30, 1434). From that time the Taborites lost their importance. The state assembly of Jihlava in 1436 confirmed the Compactata and gave them the sanction of law. This accomplished the reconciliation of Bohemia with Rome and the Western Church, and now Sigismund first obtained possession of the Bohemian crown. His reactionary measures caused a ferment in the whole country, but he died in 1437. The state assembly in Prague rejected Wyclif's doctrine of the Lord's Supper, which was obnoxious to the Utraquists, as heresy in 1444. Most of the Taborites now went over to the party of the Utraquists; the rest joined the "Brothers of the Law of Christ" (Unitas Fratrum in the Latin)(see Unity of the Brethren; also Bohemian Brethren and Moravians).

Disappearance of the Hussites
The Utraquists had retained hardly anything of the doctrines of Hus except communion in both kinds. In 1462 Pope Pius II declared the Compactata null and void, prohibited communion in both kinds, and acknowledged George of Podebrady as king under the condition that he would promise an unconditional harmony with the Roman Church. This he refused, but his successor, King Vladislaus II, favored the Roman Catholics and proceeded against some zealous clergymen of the Calixtines. The troubles of the Utraquists increased from year to year. In 1485, at the diet of Kutná Hora, an agreement between the Roman Catholics and Utraquists was obtained which lasted for thirty-one years. But it was considerably later, at the diet of 1512, that the equal rights of both religions were permanently established. Luther's appearance was hailed by the Utraquist clergy, and Martin Luther himself was astonished to find so many points of agreement between the doctrines of Hus and his own. But not all Utraquists approved of the German Reformation; a schism arose among them, and many returned to the Roman doctrine, while other elements had long before joined the Unitas Fratrum. Under Maximilian II, the Bohemian state assembly established the Confessio Bohemica, upon which Lutherans, Reformed, and Bohemian Brethren agreed. From that time Hussism began to die out; but it was - for a time - completely eradicated only after the battle of the White Mountain (November 8, 1620) and the Roman Catholic reaction which fundamentally changed the ecclesiastical conditions of Bohemia and Moravia.

Today the Czechoslovak Hussite Church claims to be the modern successors of the Hussite tradition.

- that was a part of history I wasn't aware of (probably due to the waves of Catholic reaction after the revolution's defeat).
 
Well, yes, the ascendant Catholic revanchism has something to do with it. But, it also has to do with the fact that Bohemia and the Czechs have a had a forgotten history and they blame themselves for eliminating their nobility as not having the conditions that would have allowed a proper capitalism to take root. But, this is a retro-historical engineering that ignores plenty of other countries have made successful transitions and the fact that capitalism came regardless, does not been that the Czech Lands were backward anyhow.

With three branches .
1. The Parliament-Members are elected directly by citizens of member planets.
2. The Senate-Members were chosen by the governments of member planets.
3. The Archon-(the Chief Executive)-Is elected by council of electors once every six years .
A Archon can only serve a maxim of two six year terms.
