Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
Gosh been a year and started back to work on my FFW cyberboard version. I found vassal too daunting to set up random counter trays. I believe I finally have all the Imperial pieces in the game and setup random counter trays. I also setup random trays for the six reinforcement groups available. Did some testing so that after the initial setup pieces are chosen at random 2 x battlerider, 6 x cruiser squadrons and one Imperial corps not to mention fleets and admirals, the remaining units can then be put into their respective reinforcement groups and chosen randomly when indicated. I am thinking another month to finish it up.
I would still like to do this as a browser-based game. It would take some time with work and all, but shouldn't be too hard for an advanced programmer.
I could add some really nice features to the game.
In what way? They need to do the Europa series, you know, Fire in the East, Case White, Narvik. That system was great. I see they have done the Kursk, Stalingrad and the Moscow campaign. Do you know what system these were based on? The Moscow one looks like it could be from Europa.
Europa broke down to divisonal and regimental for its larger campaigns, but some of it even went down to the battalion level. How cool and yet insane is that?!?!? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_(wargame)
The programmers would definitely have some good know-how. I would love to pick their brains in that respect, but programmers seldom let one do that.
I had a good programmer once who was willing to work on such a project with me we even went so far as to contact Marc Miller about it, but when the programmer saw how much of a take Marc wanted from the profits, he bailed, saying it wasn't worth it. That left me with the dreams and the vision of a painter, who can see the painting in his head, but can't paint.
Most of the games are SPI based which Decision Games has acquired the rights to. They seem I am guessing to use a C based .exe program that connects to their server. The program replicates all the elements of traditional war board games. You can demo "Waterloo" there is no AI though. Europa was a GDW WWII game series? I seem to remember the boxes but couldn't afford them at the time.
Howdy Otto, what Sword World pieces did you think were missing? I just went over the countermix (have an unpunched copy of FFW which makes this super easy) and everything's there - 6 distinct squadron types in the physical game, 6 distinct squadron types in the VASSAL module (FifthFrontierWar_1-2.vmod posted to the VASSAL site 2011-11-19):
On the off chance you typed 'squadrons' instead of some other counter type you actually meant, I looked over all Sword Worlds units and they're all there in the module: fleets, admirals, ground forces, and squadrons.

Well I would say I am 1/3's finished in getting all the units made.
Well there are a lot pieces to this game lol
I don't even have the regular squadrons out.
I've given up for awhile on this, just way too big to get a handle on it all.
Don't feel bad you couldn't get anything finished, it takes perseverance to get things like this done. If you (or anyone else) find any actual lacunae in the module, please let myself or the other module author know and we'll take a look.
No problem There are two versions of the module. The first one was missing a lot, but the newer one's pretty much complete. Might be best to just delete the early one from the VASSAL site altogether since it's not usable...
Would be nice to implement things like random counter draws from force pools and the like, but I haven't thought about FFW in a while either. But whatever limitations it has can be overcome with trusting players and a little ingenuity.
