Fifth Frontier War VASSAL module!

Who are these people??

imperialmercenaries.jpg

Mercenary Contragravity "Elite" Armored Recon Battalion Tech 15?? etc.

I know from the FFW setup the PSG Division is placed on Efate and the SPL Brigade on Ruie, both planets have Ine Givar insurgents. What do these PSG & SPL acronyms mean?

Unless anyone has any canon information ...

IMTU the PSG (Professional Soldiers Group) is an unbrella organisation that coordinates the activity of dozens, possibly hundreds, of lesser mercenary units (all merc units on the planet) and provides a unified command structure.

Did anyone come up with an explanation for the SPL?

IMTU both are command structures for a variety of merc units hired by the Imperium (through various proxies) to avoid the need for outright Imperial intervention
PSG = Provisional Service Group
SPL = Special Patrol Legion

Cool ideas, thanks Hemdian and Andrewmv, I thought there might be some "cannon" information about them. But taking from your ideas I might go for

Provisional Support Group
Support Provisional legion

I'll have to think about them.

Found a good article online about Ruie
http://traveller.wikia.com/wiki/Ruie_(world)
Thank you. :)

There's a whole 5000 word writeup, including a bonus world map (rather crude, I'm afraid), on JTAS Online on which that article is based (scroll down to the bottom for the relevant links).

Sadly, the author who reimagined "Rescue on Ruie" for MGT (and did a very good job of it too) didn't like it and ignored much of the material (including the map) and the editor agreed with him.

(Afterwards, I wonder if he'd misunderstood something; he wrote something about not liking Sword Worlders involved in colonizing that far away, but there were no Sword Worlders involved in my version).

Be that as it may, that's water under the bridge now. It has been superceded, and although I still feel unhappy about it when I'm reminded of it, I've otherwise put it behind me (Together with a lot of unpublished notes :().

But somebody else must amend the wiki, because I'm not going to. :nonono:

Incidentally, I notice that down towards the bottom, I strongly imply that the Zhodani used Ruie as a stepping stone to attacking Regina. I can't imagine what I was thinking.

Just downloaded Vassel & FFW after reading your thread.

I'm interested in a game if anyone is up for it. It won't be a fast game, say via email at a turn a week or so to allow for RL. If RL goes easy on us, perhaps faster :)

The only difficulty I see is with managing the secret move plots, but with the maturity of most Traveller players these days, an honesty system should suffice. Perhaps with a 3rd party passively receiving & holding turn by turn plot orders in case of a dispute.

Reply here, email (matt at stevens dot net dot nz) or PM me if you are interested.

Cheers
Matt

Hi Matt,

yeah I think Otto and I are both interested., Otto's been doing some upgrades to the module, which may not be uploaded yet.

:) we should get a game started with v1.2 to at least get the hang of the rules again & using vassal.

Its possible Otto won't mind us cluttering up his inbox with order plots. I can do the same for you two once Otto's finished his upgrade and wants to get a game in.

I am definite interested in playing. We have to do some tweeking first. The Sword Word Squadrons need to be updated, not all the squadrons are available. There could be other pieces missing as well that I haven't noticed yet. Also there is a way to setup a start tray in vassal that needs to be done. See the vassal module for "Imperium" to see what I am talking about. Otherwise we could spend hours or days just setting up the pieces.

I have been learning to modify vassal modules by toying around with the Mayday one at the moment. Vassal is pretty complex, its been a bit of a learning curve to get into it. I am pretty sure a hidden movement system can be setup in it, its just a matter of reading the help manual and figuring out how to do it. Also the trays need to be set up for randomization of the pieces when pulled, again this can be done but I haven't figured it out yet.

The pictures I was posting prior in this thread were ones I took using another play online software program called "Cyberboard." Its less complex and easier to setup than vassal but doesn't have near the sophistication, it is a play by email only. Vassal is pretty cool where you can directly connect to a server and interact in real time. I have the FFW pdfs and I was copying the graphics into cyberboard, the graphics are not as nicely done as the vassal 1.2 module. However in cyberboard I know how to pre-setup the pieces as well as setting up randomizing trays.

Hey Hans!
Thanks for all your info! I'll have to check up on those sources.

I think there was information in a Casual Encounter adventure in JTAS, some wealthy shipping magnet's son is kidnapped or something on Ruei. They listed some of the nations. I had been wondering if the SPL brigade had something to do with them. Perhaps the brigade protects the spaceport?

reimagined "Rescue on Ruie" for MGT
Oh I just realized the article I was thinking of was an Amber Zone "Rescue on Ruie" from JTAS 1. So the MGT module is a redo of this Amber Zone?

In the Amber Zone JTAS 8 "A Dagger at Efate" they mention the Imperial Military Resource Board of supplemental operations for hiring mercenary units.

Expansion of it into a full adventure, yes. And, as I said, a very good one too. All I have against it is that it papers over much of my aforementioned work on Ruie.

You would think these would be Elite units. Are the divisional units just a breakdown of the Consular Guard Corps?

Yes, they are. I think they are the ones given a detailed treatment (full TO&E) in "Zhodani Military Organization", JTAS 11.

You would think these would be Elite units.

No necessarily so. IIRC AM4:Zhodani specifies that the Consular Guard are chosen by their psionic powers (mostly teleport), not the concept of comandos as elite troops we have.

Are the divisional units just a breakdown of the Consular Guard Corps?

In the Zhodani OB in FFW (again IIRC, I cannot find it right now) they are written as separate troops, not as a CG corps that can be broken down to divisions.
