Extended Jumps

No. However - a number of players have argued online since the early 90's that jump requires a target mass at the far end. It made it into the GURPS-Canon with GTIW.

That kinda stomps heavy on that bit about the Earthers jump-1ing it to the nearest stars to encounter the Vilani, no?

They found one of the exceedingly rare (or exceedingly hard to spot -- take your pick of which implausibility you prefer) brown dwarves in deep space and used it as a stepping stone.

Really? You're kidding me, they offer that as an explanation? So all the Vilani need to do to bottle up the pugnacious Terrans and change the course of history is to put a heavy force around one brown dwarf? That's ... actually kind of funny.

Hey, wait!! We're Moties!!!

nice one.

Is this {the Mass at the endpoint} anyplace but GURPS?

It's implied but not explicit in T5, and the implication may be unintentional.

It's a not-uncommon interpretation of CT1E... especially by those who have neither TCS nor TTA. (TCS because of drop tanks, TTA because it explicitly has empty hex jumps.)

And in the case of extended jumps like the OP is talking about, it sounds like the perfect way to "time-out" those extra long jumps.

It's an implication of the setting that goes right back to the early days that dark worlds are either rare or most difficult to spot. The concepts of mains and rifts become untenable if finding dark worlds in systemless hexes is easy.

(Of course, the mains at least will logically have very little influence on transportation once jump-2 is invented, but that's another point that TPTB have ignored for 35 years).

So all the Vilani need to do to bottle up the pugnacious Terrans and change the course of history is to put a heavy force around one brown dwarf? That's ... actually kind of funny.
Too bad they didn't figure that out before the Terrans had gotten out of the bag and reverse-engineered jump-2. Also, a force strong enough to bottle up the forces several billion people can maintain is not something the Vilani governor of the Rim Province could just provide out of the assets available to him. And since dealing with barbarians on his frontier was his problem, no calling in reinforcements from the rest of the Imperium.
