Expanded Character Creation

I'm just getting into classic traveller, and I am wondering if an expanded character creation system was ever developed for the 'other' set of characters. The crimanls etc, like an advanced system was made for the military forces and merchants.

Well, yes and no. Citizens of the Imperium (which this forum is named after) provided 12 new professions, but all in basic CG format. There are a lot of 'unofficial' expanded CG systems floating around. I am sure myself and others can find links to sites on the net that have them if your interested, or you can have fun surfing and finding them yourself.

Hope it helps,

Rob

It's cool.
I'm sure I can track stuff down, just wanted
to see if their was any 'offical' stuff before I started on web stuff.

thanks for the response.

Trevor Graver did a 'Criminals' expansion along Merc/HG lines that was published in 'White Dwarf' back in the 80's (I think it was issue 18 or 19, round about the same time as 'The Sable Rose Affair.') I presume this would still be copyrighted by Games Workshop, who get rather touchy about their old stuff getting networked, even if they are never ever going to touch it again.

There were some expanded CG systems published in JTAS and Challenge as well. Startport Authority (JTAS), Scientist, Police, and Journalist (Challenge). I imagine there were others as well in other magazines.

I typed up this list for the TML, its a bit out of date, but should have alot of usefull bits for you.

This is something I started putting together I think last year sometime.
I've added some more stuff to the list. If I've missed anything, or if
you can help me find stuff I'm looking for, please drop a line.

A small and probably very incomplete listing of enhanced character
tables that are available.

Two tables of note: James Jensen has developed "The Generic Expanded
Character Generation System," which is meant to cover all careers which
do not have enhancement generation. In addition, Greg Svenson has
developed his "MT Character Generator" which has a multitude of
enhanced options. Both of these are available at Freelance Traveller.

enhanced? where available
Navy yes Ct: Bk5 MT: Players Manual
Marines yes Ct: Bk4 MT: Players Manual
Army yes Ct: Bk4 MT: Players Manual
Scouts yes Ct: Bk6 MT: Players Manual
Flyers yes MT: COACC
Sailors Maybe? Stardrive magazine (Vol 1, #1) had an article called "Nautical Force Command", which had expanded char-gen rules for Sailors. Note: I've never seen this, don't know where to
find it. I'd be very interested if this or any other enhanced chargen for the wet navy exists. I'd also be interested in other enhanced chargen for COACC.

Law Enforcer yes Challenge 30, "There when you need
them." Also, the "John Law" series of articles to be found at Freelance Traveller. In addition, Police and Ministry of Justice are available at Beowulf Down's Repair Bays. http://www.tip.net.au/~davidjw

I have not been able to find any enhanced chargen for Barbarians,
Diplomats, or Bureaucrats. I would be very interested if anyone had
enhanced chargen for these careers
At the time I posted this I only had 4 of the Alien modules; now I've got them all. They also have enhanced chargen, although they are mostly modifications of chargen from CT books 4-7.

Yeah, I suspected this would be the case,; the links to Joe Walsh's Pirate and Belter stuff don't work. They are out there somewhere hopefully. I know they are incorporated into the MT Character Generator.

Like I said, I posted it a long time ago on the TML.

I believe IIRC that the one I use I got from the Free lance Traveller site. The one I have is version 1.14 of MTCG, done by Greg Svenson. The version I got is not error free, but its better than nothing, and actually does quite well.

Some notable errors:
1. After generating a character, program prompts "Do you want to generate another character y/n" If you choose Y, the program crashes. Thus, you have to open the program each time you do a new character.
2. Minor race aliens, like the Vegans, are listed as available, but can't be loaded [Maybe because they aren't really there?]
3. The pirate chargen doesn't work; characters ALWAYS wind up on the prison tables [perhaps a little Imperial influence going on here :D ].
4. Program will occaisionally freeze when generating a belter character. I have yet to figure out exactly why this occurs, or how to replicate the error to understand why it occurs.
5. Droyne psionics does not look right in this program. Instead of the usual training, it seems like you just get one level of skill each time you go to the psionics school. I'm not sure thats right; it isn't treated that way in the Alien module [or at least I didn't read it that way; I could be mistaken].
6. Scouts are given retirement pay. Not a biggie, as long as you remember that they don't get a pension.

Now, as I've said previously, it ain't the most perfect program, but it's better than nothing, and does actually do well. I've generated about twenty pages worth of NPC's and PC's with it. It just makes everything go fast. Hopefully, Mr Svenson will come out with a version 1.15. If you out there, Mr Svenson, could you put a new one together...

PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE WITH ICE CREAM ON TOP... :D :D :D
