Does/did Joss Whedon play Traveller?

I've been watching Firefly, and lord, does it bring back memories of playing CT back in high-school and college. You have a ship with a motley crew who barely listen to the captain. No sane person would every have Jayne in his crew. (But he's played by your best friend, so you allow him.) Why the heck is the paid companion with them (she's played by your roomates sister, and she thought it would be fun). The doctor's sister is an NPC used by the GM, er, scriptwriters, to provide deus ex machina and long-term story arcs. And the pilot and his wife (Gina Torres) are played by an older married couple you know.

I've watched near every episode of Buffy and Angel, but they really didn't give me the same feeling of gaming deja vu.

I've posted this before, but in the unaired pilot, Wash shouts out "Hang on, Travelers!" as he pulls the ship away out of danger.

Now, come on... if JW didn't play Trav, then my moms a hiver...

The last episode I saw where they snuck into that federal (Imeperial? ;) ) hospital felt right out of an adventure a group I ran years ago had to deal with. The refernence to the "Core" was another possible lift form Traveller. Really liked how the high-tech weapon did nothing to the door and the comment that followed.
