Dithering About MTU

Regarding real world planetary and system conditions, would a lot of "colonies" be more massive space stations of sorts, like say Ceres from the Expanse, to give an example?

Outside of our Solar System I mean.

Based on current space journalism, I get the feeling we would seek out systems with habitable planets first with the intention of colonizing them. Intuitively that seems like the right idea, with the hope that we could recreate an Earth-like environment or find one to settle into. Kim Stanley Robinson describes some of the perils of that approach in his book, "Aurora," a very good read by the way.

I think once we find a way to settle another system, and to create a sustainable environment there for human life, we would proceed to create artificial environments like the one you describe.

But really, the best place to seek more accurate answers is probably by reading through articles on space.com or NASA's web site. :)

Well an issue there I would say is that if we only have limited FTL travel, at first at least, then we might have to take what we get.

I imagine it would take some time before we could either find an Earthlike planet, due to them being rare possibly, or terraform a world into an Earthlike world.

That probably means domed, or underground colonies I imagine?

Another neat thing might be where you have both extensive planetary and spaceborne colonies in various systems. Plenty of more stops for adventurers and adventures I imagine that way.

And it might allow star systems to be more than just "the habitable planet is the only thing worth noticing" schtick a lot of scifi has.
