defelination of the Aslan

I strongly recommend that people interested in Defelinizing Aslan read CJ Cherryh's Pride of Chanur book, or the follow on trilogy.

She delves quite nicely into the male/female roles of her alien "lions". Males do not venture off-world for example, because they are too emotional and unstable for star travel...

^ Sounds like something I thought of while reading the GDW Aslan module. It makes sense that the females wouldn't let a male wander around without adult supervision.

What dude said.

Pretty much what he said, but he forgot to mention a few even more alien aliens, and Hilfy is freaking perv! :D

If you look at some old classic Sci-fi, Pohl Anderson's Flandry and Polesotechnic League stories there are tons of good old-fashioned aliens that are good for adapting into Traveller.

Aslan: you could use the Tigery from Ensign Flandry...a low-tech seafaring cat-like race that lives on a large, heavy atmosphere wolrd. Primitive neobarbarians, but if you advance them a bit to space-faring they would be really interesting. Matriarchal, but both sexes fight...

Vargr: In Hunters of the Sky Cave, Anderson introduces the Ardizirho..a wolf-like race that sounds socially suspiciously like the Vargr, but individually and physiologically are very different.

Borthudians: Again, a cat like race from the poleosotechnic league stories that is described as humanoid but panther-like (no fur but black and with cat-like eyes and mannerisms), barbarian but star-faring (they have pagan idols burning inscense on the bridge) and are like a sci-fi Barbary Pirate type.

The list goes on....

Myself, I came up with the Prox in my original vintage 77 campaign long before the Vargr appeared. Marsupial hyena like bipeds. TL-11 Loyalty to family group supersedes loyalty to clan or any larger group Females are non-intelligent (nod to the Kzin) and populations pressure among males encourages them to strike out and gain more territory to set up their own extended family groups. As I have evolved them in my campaign they have grown into two main lines: the ones who went legit and run merchant houses, and the ones who run most of the smuggling/organized crime/pirating groups based mainly off rogue planets and moons hidden away here and there. Either way, the family is everything.

I never like the Vargr myself, nor the Aslan..but then I never much cared for the OTU: too civilised. Not enough sword n' blaster.

Really?

The Third Imperium is too civilized?! How is such a thing as 'too civilized, even possible....are you a Pirate or something?

Geez what do you want, bloody Space Opera? (*giggles* and I have some of that too. :p)

Phil McGreggor (whose name appears on the cover of Space Opera) has been known to read the boards here, and is active on the Mongoose boards currently.

Me, I've run SO. Once. Yes, glutton for punishment. With no offense to Phil nor Ed, I'd rather run Spacemaster or GURPS than fght with SO again.

Phil has some form of plans for an ATU...

A thought just occurred to me: if the Vargr are just dogs uplifted by the Ancients, and had their DNA altered for size and inteligence, then could they be bred for AKC standards?

I mean, have any mad scientists tried altering them (since their DNA would seem to be easily manipulated) for size, aggressiveness, color, stance, etc?

Imagine Rottweiler or bulldog vargr. Or Doberman Vargrs with snotty German accents and monocles?

I think there's some potential there, maybe I ought to put them in my campaign.

Six foot flightless bats running across what is now Australia are more credible than cats in spacesuits. Primarily because they existed and because cats in spacesuits cant lick their arse which my cats will do if they are (a) embarrassed. (b) avoiding hunting mice after being told no food go and hunt. (c) pretending not to watch a potentially dangerous situation in a state of absolute cool while their ears are in lock on mode.
Genetically altered cats, capable of everything that makes an Aslan, wouldn't look like cats. (as an aside Cat dna is more primitive than dog dna)

Besides the whole cat dog thing is incredibly silly. My cats think coughing up fur balls in a space helmet is dangerous.

You should meet my cat Yasutora Sado, Chad for short. He has gone from terrified feral kitten to 24 inches of laid back technocat. Fascinated by the computer, figured out how to use the mouse to change things on the computer screen. Took me months to break him. Also had to secure the power bars so he couldn't flip switches or pull the plugs from the wall socket.

Slight more annoying then the cat who accidently stepped on the piano keys-scared at first; & then decided she liked making noise on it. Tried turning the piano off at first, but she kept pushing buttons til she found the on/off switch. Eventually had to unplug the piano when not in use.

Well, I have different twist on the Aslan look

You see, Aslan don't look like earth cats, earth felines look like Aslans.

When the Grandfather and his childern were running around borrowing genes from various places one of them left a Aslan scientist(slave) behind accidently on Earth (terra). Being the only one of its race it got lonely.

Thinking about what its masters did, it decided it would do the same. It started messing around with Sabertooths and after a few decades of trying to make the perfect docile feline it came up with cats.

The lion, tiger, panther etc were just the throw aways that did not met its needs. Of course it had no problem with earth covered with felines. :)

Why do you think cats were worshiped for so long.
LOL

Have your players dig around a bit and then discover that Aslan are not genetic cats/felines but that cats/felines came from Aslan genes.

The Kzinti (singular Kzin) are a fictional, very warlike and bloodthirsty race of cat-like aliens in Larry Niven's Known Space series.

The Kzin were initially introduced in Niven's story "The Warriors" (originally in Worlds of If, 1966) and "The Soft Weapon," (1967), both collected in Neutron Star (1968).

Traveller is a series of related science fiction role-playing games, the first published in 1977 by Game Designers' Workshop.

Thus, Kzin predated any possible creation of the Aslan by 11 years!

CJ Cherryh's Hani, now... they are later:
The Chanur novels is a series of five science fiction novels (forming three separate stories) written by science fiction and fantasy author C. J. Cherryh and published by DAW Books between 1981 and 1992.

Hani, feline-like species, maned, bearded, usually of red or tawny fur. Females are smaller than humans, males much larger (for much the same reason as Earth lions).

The six foot flightless bats would need radar to "see" from a space helmet. Radar to sonar interface. Novel!

How to pacify an Aslan? psychotropic purr machine with tractor beam stroking device(emulating large parental tongue) and giant holo of bigger Aslan. Or just plain catnip to drive it up the wall (literally! and yes I have seen a cat do the Matrix movie moves)

Cats cannot resist fish. Always carry fish to distract hostile Aslan. Sardine grenades.
Never call yourself a Vet. No matter which branch of a "service" you were in.
