Deckplan Challenge - Contest

I'm awake.
Since we don't have many entries high quality scans will be acceptable. This might be a change in the rules but we need the entries.
 
 
I've never done a deckplan contest before, but I might try this anyway. I don't have any drawing software, so I'll either use a mix of the Gimp and MS paint or simply submit a hand-drawn deckplan.

Assuming this is alright, I'll decide what manner of ship to do and post a description of it. It'll probably be some sort of alien vessel.
 
Hey all, sorry to disappoint (if anyone is) but time just slipped through my fingers on this one, I got nothing done. Started with great fury but one thing and another it's none of it done. Moving on.

If my opinion matters at all I'll spout off briefly on why I don't think it came off too well fro me. I hope others have given this a good shot and I look forward to the results.

I think it was partly the length on time on this thing. It needed to be a shorter overall deal. Of course for that to work it needed smaller requirements. And I'm not blaming you Randy but it really needed more constant feedback and bumping. Getting it stickied is all well and good but it doesn't put it on the active topics list


Anyway, thanks for the work you put into it and for the push to do a little work that I hope to (some day) finish.
 
As of this time, July 31, 2005, 8:45 AM CDT (US) there are only two completed entries, one by Veltyen and the other by Alan Lee Spik. Entries will be accepted until 12:00 AM EDT (US) Aug 1, 2005. After that I will create a poll (in the polling forum of these boards) so that CotI memebers can vote.
 
Sorry I couldn't participate in the contest (RL sucks); I'll post my deckplans anyway when they will be ready.

I'm not sure if there's going to be another contest. I am, to say the least, disappointed that there were only two completed entries for this one. When some remarked about the ship sizes and the time required to complete them I adjusted the contest by extending the deadline an extra month. Don't misunderstand me both of the entries I recieved were great, I was just hoping for a larger number of entries. I know that some were unable to complete their entries in time due to real life issues and real life should come first, this is just a hobby. I'm sympathic to that. Some might say that I didn't promote the contest as it should have been but I personally don't think that my bi-weekly posting about the contest would have made much difference. If a person isn't sufficiently motivated to create the deckplans by the prizes and most importantly their own internal drive I fail to see how my bi-weekly posts would change or motivate them (maybe I'm different from some about that I'm not sure).

Anyway, if you want to approach Hunter about another deckplan contest or just start one yourself go ahead and start another thread about it. I might even enter it myself.

I'm up for the next one, too. I had lost track of the contest previously, and by the time I saw it again, I had no time to post an entry.

Also, Where's the JTAS Contest? Why is that no longer posted? I won it once, and that seemed to be it for it on COTI. Do I smell? Is it only for "GURPS Weirdoes?" Eh? Eh?

And how bout the Shaw (no relation) Webspace Contest? What's up with that?
 
I don't think the time was nessersarily a problem. The Stargalleon (which was built solely for this contest) was completed by the 10th of March this year (about 5 months ago). I wasn't being that gung-ho about it, so in spare time here and there it took a little over a month to pull the design in to the shape it was submitted in. This is while learning the tools I was using.

That said the other 3 or so designs I was working on never got completed to a polished level.

Perhaps a better term would be 2 or 3 months rather then 6.

I was going to start a challenge shortly. Sort of a combined deckplan and mercenary unit idea. Probably just for T20... but that depends on how many people want to do other things.
 
With an earlier contest I entered decided by presentation instead of content, I was pretty much a bystander for this one from the get-go. Sour Grapes? Certainly.

This board has seen two of my "quick-and-dirty" plans in the mean time (in the Type W Barge discussion), and my campaign flies around in a 1-for-1 (as in 1 hour in the hangar per hour in flight) old Type S with ever-changing deckplans, so it's not like I'm doing nothing, but inspiration strikes in odd moments and according to odd stimuli. If a contest's parameters don't catch me, that's just the way it is...

That's fair enough. I can understand why you would be disheartened. I would only be interested if the subject matter appealed to me, but I'm in a deckplan kind of mood. I guess it would make more sense for me to complete one of the ships I have sitting half completed on my website than start a new one =)

I had some thoughts about that myself. My idea was to have a contest where one would create a mercenary unit, it's ship and deckplans for said ship. I was thinking that the mercenary unit should be infantry company sized (+/-10%) as per LBB4, that would be anywhere from 114 to 140 mercs. The starship crew would be extra but may include doctors/medics plus small craft pilots and mechanics for use in merc unit deployment.

The unit should be equipped with weapons, body armor (if any), and personal gear (like IR goggles, comms, food, water canteens, etc.). If the designer wanted to he could have his merc unit mounted on AFV's (like GCarriers or grav IFV's). The details of how his unit is equipped should be presented.

The ship could be of any size capable of transporting the mercenary unit. It could be a smaller "popsicle" (where the entire merc unit is kept in low berth for transport) with no vehicles and the ship lands to deploy it's troops or it could be bigger where each infantry man has his own stateroom, extensive medical bay, a large number of vehicles for planetside transport, repair bays for the vehicles and small craft. To be complete the ship has to have deckplans.

What did you have in mind Veltyen?
 
A very similar idea. Except based on the broadsword. I like the broadsword.

A list of tickets as the objective (beachhead, escort, cadre, naval reinforcement, patrol and so on) with modification of the ship being an option. The test would be how many of the target objectives the resultant unit would be hired for. I was thinking of a general discussion to determine the list of tickets (and potentially their weighting).

The limitation of the broadsword (800 dTon sphere) is enough that there would be a certain amount of similarity between the designs. It would also stop the platoon based freetrader company and the regiment based Destroyer company from being compared head to head.

A vanilla broadsword has just enough space for a company (100 people awake and aboard).

Standard vehicle designs (re: TA1/3/6 or SD errata) would have a common manufacture bonus, with options on creation of custom vehicles. Vehicle descriptives may also be fine (especially for non-T20 based entries). I don't mind auditing custom designs.

Deckplans for the ship. List of personel. Equipment and storage status. Mottos. Fluff and so on.
 
As a side note, Gordon's contest site (referenced several times in this thread) seems to have gone to the domain sharks. If you had something there and want it to be available, it's time to find a new spot to keep it...
 
I have been off teh air awhile.

Is this conntest going to go live again, or just looking for a new host for the future?

I am justt getting up to speed with deck plans, but that sounds like a contest I might try.
