Cyberware and Bioware

OTOH, RM, maybe our current flirtation with the bio-sciences will be no more permanent than Shelley's. Nanotech could tip the balance back in favour of inorganic augmentation. Either option could be in vogue IYTU.

I'm with you there. But given that biological organisms are already complex, successful nanotech devices makes them a compelling model for how I see nanotechnology working. IOW, bio-science and nanotech will be one and the same, using the same tools and theories.

Anyway, it's all SF, and for me, SF is about asking those "what if?" questions, doing a little bit of amateur futurism :)

Wow, ATP!

Magnus

Wow, RM knows about ATP, I had to read a chapter in a Bio-molecular textbook, for my own reasons...side non-Traveller related...anyway, got a question for ya...

Spoiler:
If I was an Agent of His Majesty's Imperial Secret Service, what kinda cool wares, soft, hard and soggy would/should I have? Curious.

To borrow from the Cyberpunk RPG, here are some upgrades that a Imperial operative might have...
Soggy: Nano Optical/Nano Auditory Rebuild (Natural eyes/ears upgraded to cyber equivalent without surgery) ,
Bone/Muscle Lace (say goodbye to back problems for good)
Neural Bridge (Gives you ambidexterity)
Hard : Reflex Boost (adds either 1 permeantly to Dex stat or +2 to Dex for a limited period of combat rounds)

*bows*

Why thank there, G. F. or is the Mighty Nyssa of Traken, had sorta a thing for her back in the day...mmmmmmm, velvet. *looks around* Oops, sorry, well almost. :D

Since my pocket empire is TL 9/A .. I look at Cyberpunk for some good crbernetic implants and the drug list is pretty good too ...

Just like in Cyberpunk .. some stuff is legal .. while other stuff isn't ....

The whole concept of nanomachines rebuilding an organ cell by cell sounds a lot like Cancer. I've seen people with cancer and these processes would probably involve months of time and a whole lotta' uncontrolable pain.

Just some random thoughts for the stew.

Your talking there of TL 17 Nanotech ...

TL 17: Nanos constructed of advanced organic materials appear. These nanos can reproduce themselves even in the absence of resources. This breakthrough allows nanos to perform seemingly magic feats on a regional level (redirecting a river or moving a mountain). Nanos used in the medical field can be used to repair individual cells within a body--barring serious accident or other unfortunate circumstances--granting the host immortality.

The Easier way is thru Cloning ...

TL 13:"Dial an Organ" becomes possible, where a body part can be recreated merely by extracting the proper information from a cell from the patient.

So for treating Cancer, it's easier thru cloning the persons DNA than using Nanos ...
