CT Char Gen vs T5

Blue Ghost

SOC-14 5K
Knight
I like CT char gen, and CT extended Char Gen. It's intuitive, easy to pick up and understand, and is a game unto itself.

I had a real hard time with T5 char gen, and am wondering why CT char gen isn't used.

One thing about Classic Traveller character generation was that it was beginning-gamer friendly. Someone who had never played a role-playing game before could pick it up and run with it in a few minutes. Traveller 5.0.9, which I have looked at the most, can be a bit overwhelming to the beginning gamer, as is a bit much even for an experienced gamer. Some of the possible character careers are not exactly the easiest to work into a game either. A Scholar needs to be more of an Indiana Jones-type rather then the normal professor-type, while an Agent by definition is not going to let anyone know what he or she actually is, while an Entertainer is going to look for a big a splash as possible. Then there are all of the add-ons like genetics that just do not catch my interest at all.

Basically, for T5, it is more a matter of deciding what you are going to use, and stripping off all of the rest.

Just use the parts of T5 that you need.

I would, but the skill levels aren't backwards compatible, and I actually need to generate NPCs and an assortment of PCs for a job I promised. I mean, I got through it, but I had to email some people to make sure I had it right.

I think T5 is for the very veteran gamer, and I have no issue with that, but CT char-gen was fun, and like Timerover said, easy to pick up. It was intuitive, easy to understand, and a game unto itself. And I get the scholar and agent and other careers, and I actually like what Marc Miller's trying to achieve with them, but give me CT char-gen anyday.

Thanks for the replies. My best to T5.

I'm always adding T5 rules to my MgT2 rules, to bring more details to a setting. Just have to make sure the T5 rules I do add are compatible is all.

T5 is a much more granular game framework and the classic traveller character creator made underpowered characters compared to what the T5 task resolution requires.
T5 definitely tells more of a story about your character than the CT character creator did. Between background skills, education, career path (and risks and rewards) a character is more fully fleshed out.
my biggest issue (and I have a few with T5 character creation is the splitting of knowledges and skills. it makes it confusing to beginners to know that they might have J-Drive 3 Engineering 1 for a total Skill of 4 if working on a jump drive but if they are an engineer and need to work on a M-Drive only the Engineering 1 applies.
(of course it is truer toward life but this is a game after all... )
