Creating a Medical Doctor

Hi there folks...I'm trying to run up a doctor character and was interested in how others might be doing something similar.

I started him as an Academic, went thru school to get his PhD MD, did one more term as an Academic (Prior History Term 1) doing some teaching...I was thinking that Professional would be next logical class to multiclass into.

How do others feel about that? The rank structure for professional doesn't really fit a MD, but that can be ignored.

Interested in feedback...

For a RL example, one of my sons is in a Medical Scientist Training Program. It's six to seven years of combined graduate and medical school.
You end up with a PhD and a Medical degree.
This is after he got two undergrad degrees, one in Math/Computer Science and the other in Biology.

So we're talking 10-11 years from the start of college to finishing his postgrad work.

Close enough to three terms for government work...

Professional and Academic are closely linked to my mind. the key difference is their willingness, generally speaking, to get 'hands on'

so yeah. why not?

as for ranks: I had a player recently do his entire career as a professional pilot. I just replaced all the 'Assistant' ranks with 'pilot'

Another consideration is that he can still level up as an academic even if he's in the professional (or any other prior service)

Is he under 33? give him rank 02 in a service and have him do a military hitch. (if Honors grads get automatic commissions. Masters and PHD's are going to get ranks too)

He'll have to take a level of his service class but he can do the rest as whatever core class he qualifies for... then do that career. see what happens. maybe he'll do a jail term (and lose his license?) get him into the rogues... Stuff happens. Prior history is cool for that.

In the t20 I'm reffing, I have a noble who went thru school till getting her MD(prior history). Since she is working as a ship's doctor for the most part, she has multi-classed to Noble/Professional and is taking her levels as Professional rather than noble.

If R_Kane wants to create a Medical Doctor using T20 character generation, I suggest he and anyone else interested in T20, check the files section of “The Traveller’s Guidebook” (accessed via Moot Membership). The Guidebook has a few more classes than the “Traveller’s Handbook”, including: Convict, Corsair, Diplomat, Engineer, Flyer, Law Enforcer, Martial Artist, Medic, and Sailor.

IMHO this membership fee is the best money I have ever spent on Traveller. Check into it today!

I was helping a friend create a doctore/pilot character the other day. He also wanted to go into the Marines. Our first thought was to go to university and OTC program taking levels in Professional; then do a term as a Marine; then go back to med school; then back into the Marines.

But after checking through the T20 Player's Handbook playtest downloads in The Moot, he went with University and OTC, taking levels in Professional, then four terms in the Marines, alternating levels of Marine and Medic (from the playtest files).

We decided that to be a combat medic -- and an effective Traveller "healer" -- you don't have to have a medical degree/license, thanks to the new Medic class.
