Core Rules 5.09

Got a blizzard of emails from "GDW", Kickstarter, and DriveThruRPG with the announcement of v5.09 of the Core Rules. Just got it and haven't looked through it yet except to scroll to the bottom and find an index. Huzzah!

It looks like combat is pretty cleared up except that the chance to hit in melee is 0 for evenly matched fighters. I KNOW that got brought up while they were working on it so it's REALLY disappointing to see it still in there.

Well, it IS 5.09, not 5.1. Perhaps they'll fix it in 5.09.09.

Even if you use the cover rules to take a -6 to be hit and -3 to hit your foe, if they do the same it evens out to 0.

It could easily be fixed with a +7 modifier to the task. But after all the wait for combat revisions it's a bit disappointing.

On the other hand almost all the instances of Pen=C1 have been removed from blade maker which is good because while I personally like melee weapons to have at least some relevance, a C1=12 barbarian kicking tanks over with an axe is absurd.

The index is a welcome addition but as it's a file, not a book, I'm disappointed that Rob's green list ship stats didn't make the cut.

Page numbers don't appear to be matching the Table of Contents.

Not to just jump on the negative right away, but I thought you all should know.

For example, Robots says page 560, but it's on PDF page 575. VehichlMaker says page 280, but it's 243. I'm sure there's more, but that's just first two I looked for.

Just flicking through it now, and noticed a couple of things straight off.

1. I know it was in the errata, but is it intentional for Assault rifles and carbines to have Blast and Bang, while all other assault weapons have Bang and Blast? (p.216)

2. Character Generation: Every character now gets a motivation, a secret, an organisation that they have significant ties to, and a significant event in their past. (p.72-77).

3. Combat cards, I don't remember seeing them in the original. (p.186-190)

still reading..........

That's exactly what I just did after downloading it a few minutes ago.
Great to see an index, but most importantly it's great to see T5 moving forward again.

Perhaps a PDF Errata Thread Needed?

Just downloaded it. Quickie Question...
On the copyright page, it says "Print Edition 5.1"

Is this 5.09 or 5.1 or what version is the pdf?
Will I be getting updates at DriveThru as other publishers do on occasion reissue pdf files?
Does this mean that a new print version is coming out? If it is cleaned up, perhaps a new hardcopy may be worthwhile.

I looked it over. Well, that's not quite true. I spot check it through the combat section.

I was pleased to see some changes. Overall, the book is just more "readable". Organization is much, much better.

And, it feels like Traveller. It feels like CT, but more.

On the other hand, there are still a lot of problems that need to be addressed. I caught the Melee Combat issue mentioned above, too. That's a biggie.

Spectacular Success still gets easier the harder the task gets. Why should it be harder to roll a perfect success when taking off the security panel on a nuclear missile than it is to actually defuse the nuclear warhead?

There's some other issues that I caught.

It still needs a lot of work.

Downloaded and browsing.

First impressions are that it looks more "finished". I like the black borders and more definite placement of tables and columns.

The disappointment, several things I submitted as errata are unaddressed.

Two little things; I've seen a couple of common sense additions and clarifications, and I just spotted the "additional index options" bit at the bottom of some maker and ACS pages that point you to other useful rules.

[EDIT] Woohoo Alternate movers are back for spacecraft (its complicated but workable). thanks Marc and team for that bit.

Haven't had a chance to read it properly yet but ... yeah. :D. (Doing the Snoopy happy dance.)

So, since this isn't the final version and the existing errata thread is 41 pages, should a new errata thread be started to keep things clearer?

Marc is still working to bring about a true 5.1. This is an interim effort.

It looks like combat is pretty cleared up except that the chance to hit in melee is 0 for evenly matched fighters. I KNOW that got brought up while they were working on it so it's REALLY disappointing to see it still in there.

yep... I did bring that up Many times... but since they fixed a lot of other combat issues it is better.

remember (and you know this...) spectacular failure also increases at the same rate. I for one don't worry about this that much.. Either Disarm the nuke surprisingly or detonate horrifically is your real options.
the interesting part I always found was spectacular failed successes.... 666111....

Before spending the money to purchase it, is it: 1) Searchable using a PDF reader, and 2) is is possible to copy and paste from it, are is it simply readable with no possibility to pick and choose relevant pieces?
