CharGen Question For T5 Players

My issue is that people here have two knowledges for a level 2 skill. As I read page 144 of the book, it takes three receipts of a skill to get a point in the skill. Yet each receipt from first receipt to 3rd you gain a knowledge (which is used as a very specific asset/skill).

Also in certain careers and educations the adoption of a major or a minor can make for a very skilled individual.

There's a helpful table on the bottom of Page 144. Except when ANM school (for example) dictated otherwise, that's the model I followed.

First Receipt of Skill = Skill-0. Knowledge-1
Second Receipt of Skill = Skill-0. Knowledge-2
Third Receipt of Skill = Skill-1. Knowledge-2
Fourth Receipt of Skill = Skill-2. Knowledge-2

So like earlier posters, The top skill(s) around 5, maybe some 2/3s, then mostly 1s.

That's what I'm seeing. I'd define a T5 Average Joe like this:

Average Joe
777777

Primary Skill? Skill-5

Average Skill? Skill-2

Some Skill? Skill-1

Thus, if a Ref needs an NPC on the fly, he can just plop in the above. Need a brain surgeon to perform brain surgery? Stat-7, Skill-5.

Need a security guard to shoot at PCs? Stat-7, Skill-2.

Need a mercenary to shoot at PCs? Stat-7, Skill-5

Need a ship's engineer to deal with the admin stuff and the dockmaster? Stat-7, Skill-1

RULE OF THUMB FOR GENERIC NPCs

-- Typically, default to Skill-2.

-- For expert or a character's primary skill, use Skill-5.

-- For expertise in some non-primary area, a generic character will have Skill-1.

You probably would not need to add this, BUT there is one edge category to think about: Foreign language skill equals the higher of Int or Edu.

So:

Ambassador reasoning with an Ihatei battle fleet? Characteristic 7, Skill 7.
Mercenary recruiter hiring vargr corsairs for a raid? Characteristic 7, Skill 7.
