OK then, after having a perfectly rotten time bidding on eBay, now I'm thinking about the budget option -- cardstock starships. Anyone tried this? Any opinions?
Are you talking about cardstock spaceships similar to Steve Jacksons Cardboard Hero series?
Or are you talking about CCM (Constructible Card Miniatures) like the StarWars and Pirates games (WotC and then WizKids which both stole/took the idea from Z-Cards by California Creations)
Or are you talking about spaceships like the ones from ARMADA Assult Fleet game by Steve o'Hurley?
First one is good for just general positioning and quick battles. If I can not have miniatures then I at least want some graphic representation.
Second ones are good, except they don't always look like the ships they are suppose to.
Third one is good cause you fold along the lines and have a 3D object that looks like the ship (OK, it is a 4 or 6 sided box with the correct image of the ship shown on each side).
Huh... I'd forgotten about the "box" representation -- TOG did that too. Simple to construct, you let the graphic do the talking, they can get pretty small, and they're easy to store.
Ad Astra Games uses box miniatures for all their games. Once their upcoming Squadron Strike game is out they intend to have available (by subscription) some game extras that include an online utility that will let you use your own art to make your own box miniatures for the game.
