Block?

Yep, block = Wpn Def.

Most MT errata for the Players' Manual had been included in the second printing, and by the third nearly all errata had been corrected.
 
It's really rather obvious in the next paragraph, when it explains that that task is getting past the block. For the really obnoxious, WepDef can be a calculated: DexMod+Block.

Evasion/dodging would add brawling or athletics, instead of block.

Melee is the ONE area where MT's combat system is clunky to me. But I make it work.

Just FYI. The weapon block number wasn't a MT original. Like the armor values used in MT, the weapon block number came from CT.

Both of those are taken directly from Striker.

BTW, Striker also uses a "to-hit" bonus for some melee weapons, along with the "block" number.
