Lightning-Class Cruiser
Built with a TL14 unstreamlined hull, the Lightning-class cruiser is a fleet intruder and assault cruiser, used for surprise attacks. Its Jump-5 drives help it jump behind enemy lines. It also has Maneuver-2, two layers of armor, and an improved C&C rating of 7. Its payload consists of a Modified C-class Particle Accelerator spine, and four fuel shuttles. Secondaries include ortillery bays and salvo racks, and a mix of defenses: beam lasers, sandcasters, nuclear dampers and meson screens. Light fighters fielding fusion guns screen the cruiser from missile attacks.
The resource allocation for a squadron of eight: 23.4 RU (21 kt per RU).
Design Notes
A standard Particle Accelerator C spine is 4,500 tons. At TL 14, the C spine is commissioned at a Modified stage, reducing volume to 2,250. It therefore costs 2.25 RU. The power required is 20 EP x 2,250 tons / Efficiency (0.9 for Modified spines), or 50,000 EP. The 50,000 EP power plant displaces 1500 tons, and costs 1.5 RU. Fuel volume is 40% of the spine's volume, or 900 tons, divided by a slightly decreased Efficiency (0.9), for 1000 tons.
Proportional values include: Jump-5, which requires 12.5% h.v., Jump fuel, which requires 50% h.v., Advanced Maneuver-2, which requires 2/3% h.v., Improved Power-5, which requires 7.5% h.v., Power plant fuel, which requires (5%/1.1 = 4.5%) 4.5% h.v., one extra layer of armor (the first layer is always free), which requires 4% h.v. Another 4% takes care of an upgraded C&C. Secondaries, including fighters, take up a total of 4% of the hull. These elements total 91.9% of the hull.
Therefore, payload takes up the remaining 8.1% of the hull. Thus the volume of the hull is
4,870 / (1 – 0.919) = 4,870 / (0.081) = 60,123 tons, rounded up to 62,000 tons.
