Trader A-CL30 Beowulf Mk V/LX MCr222.9

Builder: Clan Severn
Owner: Republic of Regina
Disposition: In Service

Using a 300-ton, TL21 hull, the Beowulf Mk V Free Trader is the "sporty" and yet also "nostalgic" ship, for the successful businessman who wants to "be" a lowly Trader!

It mounts maneuver drive-E, hop drive-E, and power plant-E, giving a performance of Hop-3 and 3G acceleration. Fuel tankage supports one month of operations and two consecutive jumps at Hop-3. Attached to the bridge is a Computer Model/3 std. There are 19 staterooms and 16 low berths. Installed weaponry include an Anti-Matter Missile launcher, a Stasis gun, and a Disruptor. All are in deployable quad turret mounts. Cargo capacity is 60 tons. The ship has a lift body hull, with scoops and intakes for frontier refueling. It can land on water, and is built for underwater operations.

The ship carries a Launch in an interior hangar. The ship has 3 crew --- Pilot, Engineer, and Medic, and up to five gunners/troops in a barracks. The ship's computer typically acts as Astrogator, Steward/Freightmaster, and one Engineer. It can carry 16 passengers and 16 low passengers.

For the hubris of the people who want to say they "own" a "Beowulf" but are far too rich to actually have a TRUE Beowulf. The thing probably doesn't even look like a Beowulf.

For a true(r) descendant of the Beowulf, check out the Mark IV.

This presumes a series of Beowulfs identified by a particular shipyard, and probably not any sort of universal classification system.

Beowulf "Mark I", aka the Beowulf, created in antiquity using TL9 tech, geared towards low price.

Beo Mk II, perhaps TL 12 components.
Beo Mk III, advanced components for space efficiency.
Beo Mk IV, the first version with the Hop drive.
Beo Mk V, apparently TL 21.

The "LX" versions are "Stretch Beowulfs" and tend to cater to the "business jet" market, rather than the free trader.

Hmmmm....I did a TL-15 update to the Beowulf (IMTU it is colloquially known as the "B") for my thread on payload-up design.

I like your new series, and IMTU I think the Mk III will be my TL-15 version. It seems like it goes up in 3-TL increments, so this would fit right in, and the Mk IV would be TL-18ish.

You da man, Rob!

When I was thinking of the Mark III, I realized that it probably must have been associated with TL 15 industry. If I were to design a Mark III, I'd probably make a TL 16 version, just to jazz things up.

Sure, why not? An interesting idea too.

A 140 ton ship can get away with using Type A drives for Rating-2 performance. Sounds like it's worth trying.

Well, I created a 140t Far Trader, and it looks a lot like the 200t one except it has greater range and less payload. Which makes sense, since about the only thing you could cut is payload.

So really it's closer to a "compact" Empress Marava.

Far Trader A2-AU20 Compact Marava-18 MCr31.3

Using a 100-ton, TL18 hull, the Far Trader mounts maneuver drive-A, hop drive-A, and power plant-A, giving a performance of Hop-2 and 2G acceleration. Fuel tankage supports one month of operations and two Hop-2s. Attached to the bridge is a Computer Model/1 std. There are 12 staterooms and 8 low berths. Cargo capacity is 50 tons. The ship has an unstreamlined hull.

The ship has 3 crew, and can carry 8 passengers and 8 low passengers.
