Annic Nova

Having bought all the FFE books (I had all the original LBB's back in the 1970's but lost them) and a semi-complete set of Megatraveller, am thinking of re-running some of the original CT adventures using MT (or maybe TNE)rules.

I've always loved the Annic Nova as the perfect PC ship (low maintenance, effectively jump-5 and actually forces you to hang around systems while the batteries recharge) and would love to Megatravellerize or TNE it.

Has anyone done this already? - I know FFS has solar sails and and batteries which presumably can be slotted into a MT design sequence but I can't quite get my head around what values to give them - do I work out how much power a Jump-3 and a Jump-2 drive need and then assign battery and solar sail size accordingly (but then it also has life support and lasers to run and no power plant! )

Why for? You have a deckplan, you know the armaments (I forget if there were any) and J and M drive ratings. What else do you need? Why bother with a painful gearhead design? Just fill in the ship profile from what you know and add lib the rest. Make it up. It's an alien technology at any rate....

Antony:

Just what I was looking for!

Lots of other cool stuff on your site as well.

Did you calculate what the fractional acceleration provided by the two ship's boats are - using High Guard I came up with 0.15G.

Also noticed you replaced the two 40t pinnaces with two 30t ships boats and a 30t docking cradle - is this because of the suggestion on the TML Annic Nova backstory discussion that originally there was a third ship's craft which docked at the rear cargo bay and left with the surviving crew?

Kaladorn:

While not a gearhead myself, I do like using the more complex ships from later versions of Traveller.

I've already run Annic Nova using CT - what interests me is how different this and the other classic adventures will be using a more detailed ruleset.

i.e having to work out whether your batteries actually do have enough charge left to use your lasers against the corsair that's just turned up, having to make decisions on which star types to stop at based on the different recharge rates, just much of your solar sail was damaged by that asteroid hit etc.

Another interesting campaign possibility is the idea of building a whole commercial line of Annic Nova class ships specialising in long jump routes that otherwise need much more expensive fusion powered jump-5 ships to reach (given a bigger sail and more batteries you could presumably get a second jump-2 out of it as well - which would make all those Jump-7 worlds in the Reft like the Islands commercially accessible).

And as you can't design an Annic Nova II under Book 2 or High Guard you need a more gearhead ruleset.

I did assume that the vessel originally had provision for a third boat, though it may not have actually had one.

The imperial standard boats in my mind always raised the question of whether they were original equipment given that the technology in them did not match the Annic Nova either.

Incidently the jump capacitors in the Annic Nova could be charged up using the fusion power plants of these boats rather than the solar panels. This also lends credence to my theory that the boats were not the original types.

One small problem using an Annic Nova for rift runs:

You jump into mid-rift, unfurl the solar cell and wait a very long time with the nearest light source / star being 2-3 parsecs behind you - oops!!

What if you change the solar array into zero-point energy accumulators? This might be more believable, since the power of a fusion reactor is orders of magnitude higher that what you could expect to collect from a star at a safe distance. A zero-point energy accumulator could recharge anywhere, even in interstellar space.
