Annic Nova (Warning - Spoilers!)

SOC-12
What's the deal with the ship in the Classic Traveller double adventure Annic Nova?

Where did it come from?
Who built it?
What language was everything written in?
Why did the disease kill the family, buy it only makes people who find the ship sleepy?

Thanks for the heads' up.

Also, why am I posting a spoiler warning for an RPG adventure that was first published 35 years ago?

Dunno...does it matter really? Its a good alien mystery for players. The Alien film was better without all the noise added to the background by Prometheus - Annic Nova works best the same way. Sometimes it just works to throw something like this at the payers and then have it go away to remind them that the universe just isn't as orderly and generic as the rulebooks say it is.

Why did the disease kill the family, buy it only makes people who find the ship sleepy?

Immune response to an alien bug. Humans, or whatever the players run in this part of the galaxy, don't die from the virus or bacteria that is lethal to the beings that came from the part of the galaxy the Nova's crew came from.

...also, if a killer disease were to get transmitted back to Imperial Society, who knows what would happen? This way at worst a severe "planetary time-out" happens for a few days....the effects of the adventure (no matter what the PC's do) are self limiting....

To answer your last question first: everyone loves a mystery.

Not even Marc Miller is sure where they came from. His guesses place the ship "far to coreward", as in past the Vargr Extents.

The writing was in a kind of archaic Vilani font. That doesn't mean they were Vilani, though, just that they had contact with them on some critical level millennia ago.

I seem to remember that most Imperial citizens (i.e. the players) had broad-spectrum antivirus shots that gave them some protection from the bug.

That, in itself, is one of the most provoking brain-larvae of the OTU :D I've long been interested in the 'foreign' contacts of the Vilani (pre-1st Imperium and during) towards the Core in particular.

Personally, I kind of enjoy thinking about a polytaxic civilization(s?) to Coreward, fulminating against the corrupt, depraved, defective, ultimately doomed spawn of the rejected ones left on "Earth". The basic nature of reality will see them erased, of course; but what havoc and misery can they wreak till then? Normal and decent people (of whatever species) are pretty obligated to step in...

WOOF! WOOF! BUUKHA! BUUKHA! Animelishakku khvazdeghqha eri, KHZHA!!!

In My Traveller Universe, the Annic Nova is somewhat of a Droyne artifact, built by one of Grandfather's great-grandchildren (definitely NOT canon there). The fold-out energy-gathering canopy is essentially a controlled version of a "black globe" generator, restricted to the cables of the canopy, but quite efficient at collecting energy. Power for the jump drives is supplied by a connection to a pocket universe containing a sun that has an unlimited range with respect to supply jump drive power.

The missing pinnace had a Maneuver Drive equivalent to Drive F that was capable of 2G acceleration and could be connected to the pocket universe for power through a cross-connect from the Jump Drive rated at 2 (they have the same power requirements), the maneuver drive being reactionless and has half the mass and volume of the standard F drive (for Classic Traveller). It would be possible to replace the pinnace with a standard one containing a reactionless maneuver drive of standard mass and volume for Drive F.

Note, all maneuver drives in My Traveller Universe are reactionless, but emergency rocket and/or fusion drives may be carried.

The disease is a leftover one from the Ancient War, and is Droyne-specific with limited cross-over to humans and other mammals. It is deadly against Vargr and Aslan as well however, as in MTU, they are both genetically modified Terran mammals and the disease was structured to attack them as well. Unless vaccinated, Vargr and Aslan will succumb within 24 hours of symptom onset, based on rolling on the extreme chance on the disease table, reading the chance of infection as the chance of dying. A medic with a skill level of 3 or higher, with specialization in either Vargr or Aslan, can add a +4 to the survival roll. If the disease is survived by the Aslan, Vargr, or Droyne, recovery will take 14 minus their Endurance in weeks. It would be possible to develop a vaccination for Vargr and Aslan from surviving individuals, as they are then permanently immune to the disease. Droyne would typically, but not always be immune from prior vaccination.

Neat plot elements, Timerover!

@Sayat: all I can find for the definition of polytaxic is this on climate change:

somewhere on the web said:
Polytaxic episodes are characterized by high organic diversity, higher and more uniform oceanic temperatures, with continuous pelagic deposition, widespread marine anoxicity, and eustatic sea-level rises.

So, something like "lots of races hanging out together"?

The Ancient artefact origin for the Annic Nova has never struck me as plausible. I know a lot of people use this explanation or one similar, but it's not for me.

At the end of the adventure the players can keep the ship, if it were technology beyond Imperial understanding it would have been immediately impounded for IN study.

The fact that it uses a different power system doesn't break MWM's dictat that no minor races independently discover the jump drive in the OTU; there's nothing to stop a minor race recovering a derelict misjumped ship and working out how to adapt their own generator technology to power the jump drive.

The first time I read The Spinward Marches (ca. 1982) I mentally pegged the crew of the Annic Nova as Darrians - IIRC the adventure describes them as being of slight build.

This is, of course, just a connection I made. However, you could reasonably make up some sort of minor race or former colony somewhere just outside the Regina subsector.

It sure is hard not to love the language of science... LOL ;-)

It's not a good explanation, but it is, IMO, the best available.

The problem with that is that if the power collection technology that allows the Annic Nova to jump with a few weeks worth of collected solar energy and empty fuel tanks was already known to the Imperium, jump drives would have been revolutionized long ago (back whenever the Imperium figured out that technology). And if the Imperium does not already know about that technology, the PCs would not be allowed to keep the ship no matter what it's origin. Even if the law that made all Ancient artifacts Imperial property didn't actually apply, the Imperium would impound the ship anyway Pro Bono Imperium. It's just too useful a technology.

And if the PCs were allowed to keep the ship, they would be able to sell it for a huge amount of money rather than bum around in it.

In my Traveller Universe, the Annic Nova comes from another universe entirely. The “Solar Sail” isn’t for power at all, but is instead laced with crystals; each crystal is aligned to the energy signature of a different universe, and the sail is a special navigational tool. The Aliens of the Annic Nova discovered the secrets of Navigating Aetherspace (what I use in place of “Jump” travel). The disease was due to the crew picking up a dangerous artifact in yet another universe in the hopes of saving that universe from an impending catastrophe.

Once the player characters unraveled the mystery (I ran this in 1983 or 1984 I believe) the Interplanetary Relief Society (what are the “scouts” of MTU) discovered the ship’s unique navigation abilities can also be used to travel through time. This created a special branch of the IRS, and placed the retrofitted Annic Nova into service as my special “Deus Ex Machina” whenever I wanted to take Player Characters from one event in one of my game universes to another event in another game universe.

Annic Nova was written so early in Traveller's history that it cannot be made to fit into what the OTU became.

That is a good thing because it means Annic Nova can be more easily fit into all our personal TUs!

The annic nova can be built in T5.

Sifu peeks in...

Funny thing. I have been too busy too even lurk around here in I don't know how long, and what do I see on the home screen for CotI but ANNIC NOVA, the focus of a story I have been working on for the past few days. One must take advantage of serendipity, so have a seat, friends...

from novel TERRAN EXODUS, story ALPHA AND OMEGA

“Between spacers and spirits, you can’t go far without hearing the name Franklin.”

Rodriguez did not respond, being engaged in looking about the large room to see if they
were being observed. It did not appear to be so, yet he still seemed a bit nervous. Was
that why he activated their privacy screen?

Polarized duraplas panels slid down over the exterior of their booth. An air circulation
system began running, and a white noise generator ensured that any recordings would be
static filled and useless. As Rodriguez sipped at his glass and tried to resume his normally
calm demeanor, King spoke to him.

“There are some strange things going on, my friend. Our luck being just one of them.”

“What do you mean?”

“Just think about it. We are among a handful of Hamilton’s entire scout fleet that did not
get the Silicon Plague. Only one month in isolation, and we got our lives back. I really
feel sorry for the ones they have locked down in the hospital.”

“Heard any scuttlebutt about them?”

“That‘s strange too. Lojaks clamped down on everything. My usual Bay 13 contacts are
silent as well."

Rodriguez drained his glass in a single motion, then refilled it. Now he really looked
nervous.

“What’s wrong?”

“That tale sounds incredible, but I think mine is going to top it.”

“Let’s hear it.”

“Remember that fleet escort that came through last month, with all that security practically
tripping all over themselves to guard one man?”

“Yeah, they handed him off to the Lojaks and were all sent into quarantine themselves.
What’s going on with him?”

“He’s not local.”

“Sure, he’s not. There are so few live bodies out here that most of us recognize each other.
I bet he‘s just a Lojak plant, here to test security.”

“No, not a plant, according to my source in Receiving. He’s from another empire, outside
of our borders. Beyond our exploration zones to this point. We could be at war soon with
another aggressive human empire.”

"That's quite possible. With the Dominion in total war mode, things will become a bloody
mess. And here we sit, the tip of the spear."

"Don't lock and load yet. This story gets better."

"If that is the case, we need another drink."

Soon sipping at his refilled glass, Rodriguez continued.

"Remember that bulk transport last week, the one they isolated at the orbital element? It
was carrying his craft. Unusual design, they say."

"A Rifter design? Those pea shooters are incredibly tough."

"No, almost all of the assemblies are Terran standard designs. What really has those
"Greene's Heirs" engineers scratching their heads is how they are put together."

King shook his head slowly from side to side.

"That sensor won't lock-on, friend. Basic starship construction hasn't changed much
since gravity control was developed. Sure, there are a lot of strange craft out there,
but they can all be traced back to a few basic designs."

"Well, this certainly qualifies as 'strange' by any standard. Two separate G-space drives. No ion maneuver pack, in fact no normal space drive on the main craft. Two utility small
craft attached, both with thrust drive plates. The really strange part? No internal fuel
tankage!"

King sat mute, his face displaying a range of emotions as he compared his own engineering
skills with the information received.

"Another remarkable feature is the age of some of the components. Some of them almost new, others over a hundred years old!"

The known unknowns of the Annic Nova.

Funnily enough I was reading it today and noticed some things:

1. The ship's numbering and the dials inside the ship are old high Vilani.
2. The language spoken on the ship's video system is unknown; indicating it is not Vilani.
3. There's video featuring a man without any hair. Whether it's specific to him, or a racial characteristic is unknown.
4. There's a bottle of 20 year old Terran booze on board.

My theory: It's an old Vilani ship that was recovered by a hitherto unknown minor human race. It became the vessel for a space faring family but misjumped...in fact, the Annic Nova suffers from this problem a lot, given where it's been ending up. One misjump put them somewhere near the Solomani Rim, where they traded or came across the liquor bottle. They probably contracted a disease from the Solomani...if they were from an uncontacted world they may not have resistance to diseases found on Earth. The last 20 years has seen the ship continue to suffer from frequent misjumps until it ended up in the Regina Subsector.

Annic Nova was written so early in Traveller's history that it cannot be made to fit into what the OTU became.

I know it's not elegant but I just kind of ignore the incompatibilities between early and later Classic Traveller setting details rather than find torturous explanations to reconcile them.

I figure the Imperium could well have the energy collector powered Jump drive tech but who wants to wait around for weeks for it to charge? YMWV.

I think this is correct. Collectors in T5 are indeed a retcon, diverging from the originals in a few ways.

The way I always saw it was that a minor human race contracted a Droyne colony to build it for them... hence the very alien architecture and power sources, but the very normal small craft. So, accessible yet alien technology, weird ship design, but meant for humans.

It's definitely intended for a Minor Human Race (MHR): same air, same food, same kinds of ship controls, fairly standard smallcraft, Solomani wine, same accommodations (so same body form)... and the disease affects humans (assuming they seldom jump from sophont to sophont).
