Ammunition Types

I have a question that I would like to throw out to the forum, why are there different ammunition types and why would any player ever choose one that does less damage.

For example a 10mm snub pistol HE round has penetration = 1, and a HEAP round has penetration = 6, so why oh why would anyone ever use HE rounds? Likewise for that favourite weapon the ACR, DS rounds are the ammo of choice.

So in your campaigns how do you handle different ammo types and do your players every load on HE in their snub pistols?

Makes a lot of difference in my version of BRP Traveller. For example, snub HE does lots of damage but has no penetration, while HEAP is the opposite. Now, not having my Striker books to hand (it's too far to stretch to the bookshelf
), I'm not sure how they stack up as everything is based on penetration alone.

HE affects everything in its danger space, while HEAP should only affect the target, giving it a danger space in the MT tables is an error IMHO.

HEAP/HEAT is still a high explosive round; it's about as dangerous as HE to anyone adjacent to it. It's much more dangerous than straight HE to what it actually hits, of course.

There are some places that you would NOT want your rounds to go thru everything. Some that I can think of off-hand would be the bridge of a ship, very close-quarters, hostage situations etc.

Not all types of Ammo need to have the same sort of availability. Armor Piercing bullets might well be restricted or illegal even when regular snub pistols and bullets aren't. Maybe HE is o.k. because it's "Used in self defense, and by hunters" while HEAP is "Illegal cop-killer bullets that are used by terrorists".

For a variety of reasons, different rounds have different abilities. HE is low pen, wide area. HEAP is lesser area, higher pen (and poorly handled in the extant rules, but easily handled).

With an ACR, I can't drop a BD Troopie unless I use HEAP. But same said HEAP is a waste against unarmored pinkies... for those, slug is more than effective. But that slug will just bounce off a suit of BD-13...
