Adventure hooks/plot lines for the Rebellion era

Mr. Elliot,

Great thread! And great posts from everyone!

As hard to swallow as the Rebellion may be from an "I play with Traveller" standpoint; many of the events simply cannot be reconciled with what little we know about the Imperium, the Rebellion is a superb setting from an "I play Traveller" standpoint. Keeping that distinction in mind, MegaTraveller can and should be viewed as a rousing success for DGP and GDW. It really did open up the OTU setting to more adventure possibilities.

As a campaign 'skeleton' of sorts to hang different adventures from, Nail Missions may fit you bill. IIRC, they are mentioned in the Rebellion Sourcebook and an example involving a bleeding edge, TL-16 spinal mount is provided. The PCs must travel from the Marches to a IN Depot on the other side of Vland in order to procure the documentation the new weapon requires.

In a Nail Campaign, the PCs have a long term goal that keeps them on the move. The goal could really be anything; an item, a person, a treaty, a drug, and so forth. Thanks to this, the GM has a ready hook with which to insert the PCs in any number of adventures. (US television is particularily enamored of this plot device, you'll see it used in everything from Rawhide to Route 66 to The Fugitive to The Incredible Hulk.) Adventure ideas for this campaign format as easy to come up with:

- The PCs could involve themselves in speculative trade as a way of paying the bills during their quest.
- A party who has the repair parts the PCs require asks them to do him a service by way of payment.
- The PCs must settle a factional conflict on some backwater world before they can safely access whatever items/materials they need.
- Another group attempts to hijack the PCs vessel for use in their own Nail Mission.
- The PCs lose their vessel and are forced to hijack a replacement.
- A long term nemesis; i.e. the reporter in Hulk, dogs the PCs footsteps and stirs up trouble for them.

As you can see, the list is endless.

Now which Nail Mission Campaign would I have enjoyed running in the Rebellion Era? Hold onto to ya' vacc suit helmets...

Saving Lieutenant Windhook

Imagine trying to find the poor chump who actually knows what happened in the Princes' apartment? Did Lucan really scrag Varian in cold blood? Or was it the unhappy accident he claims it was? Lots of people, and not just the Big Factions, will want to know the answer to those questions.

Have fun.

Sincerely,
Larsen

I think we could also resurrect the Black Duke and have players go into Dulinor's Domain and begin to realize the reforms are needed.

They go back into Norris Domain and begin to formulate change. This puts them into conflict with INS & IBIS. As they flee the Marches through Corridor, it brings them into Vilani Space.

But, I like the idea of Saving Lieutenant Windhook...but I think that we ought not assume that Norris will welcome with open arms...

One of my favourite hooks was Wrong Time Wrong Place - used to great effect in Knightfall - the innocent players are caught up in an assault on a world and taken prisoner/hostage/fall in with the wrong crowd. Add to that, players who are factional, then things get very interesting.

Home to the Front is a plot line I like - the players are Solomani/Daibeians/Antareans etc are are somewhere else in the 3I. In order to get back to defend (or just see) the homeland the players have to travel through territory belonging to various factions. Of course, they learn their homeworld is a target for some new superweapon...

In the vein of wrong place, wrong time...why not explore the whole tradition of a Press Gang. Whereby, players on some frontier world are brought into service of Her Majesty's Imperial Navy (Margaret) only to be revolted by her treatment of the Geonee turns to Lucan only the sadist desires of this Imperium to be to bloodthirsty and unable to escape to Dulinor's Republic makes their way into Craig's Space.

There finding refugee finds themselves as the centre of Intrigue between Solomani & Imperial & Aslan allegances.

Finding out that home is actually where you make it. The players offer their diplomatic services, only to find their loyalities torn assunder just as the Imperium disintegrates into countless micro polities called Pocket Empires, including that of their own homeworld now dominated by a Chrismatic Dictator bent on larger ambitions...

I'll one up that. Your party could also be:

1. Lt. Windhook (NPC) and the hapless clods he hops aboard with, now running from the might of INI just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or alternately, he and some people he trusts trying to escape with 'the truth'.

2. The people HUNTING Lieutenant Windhook, and not for 'the truth', which is a malleable and much abused concept, but to SHUT HIM UP PERMANENTLY. Not everyone would enjoy this, but I know a few PCs would enjoy the thrill of the hunt.

I thought the suggestion of players being a cell of the Brothers of Varian (perhaps even couriers, etc or some members are nobles, perhaps members of the moot....) was worthy. That would make for an interesting 5th column kind of campaign (vive la resistance!).

Another interesting one would be someone trying to stop the madness at the Imperial Court, to oppose the excesses of Lucan and to avoid getting shot for doing so.

Of course, there is also the option of making players members of other races (Aslan, Vargr, Solomani, Zhodani, Hiver, or minor races like the Swordies) and seeing how *they* react to the assassination and the Rebellion. Sort of an 'outsiders view'.

One player in our campaign received a packet from her family (who lived on Chant, only a couple jumps from Sylea) which contained the coordinates of the family panic-center (akin to a tiny jumpstart cache). Of course, the packet was delivered via a robotic aide that just happens to have been Varian's personal journal-bot, which just happened to accidentally record the assassination...
