A Map of the Galaxy...?

After the great snow storm, suffering from cabin fever, I launched out to the local food store to acquire vital bags of nachos. Whilest there, I picked up a copy of Star Wars Insider, to amuse my self. The latest issue, #65, has a wonderful little map of the Star Wars galaxy, showing whats where, and little detailed blurbs of significant planets. It reminded me somewhat of the new Imperuim game.

After looking at this thing, I thought to myself, gee wouldn't it be great If we had something like this for the Traveller known universe HINT HINT HINT :D

A decent quality, poster sized glossy map of all canon space would be nice, especially in relation to the rest of the galaxy. It doesn't have to show every star system, just some of the more important ones, the domains, and where the other empires all are.

Clifford Linehan's The Core Route Projects site claims to have a map of the Traveller galaxy as a .zip file, but I tried to download it and all I ended up with was a red x. But you can see even from the small preview version how truly tiny Charted Space is on the galactic scale.

As for a dream project, at the scale of the Shane Maclean's Gateway Domain map as printed on a single 8.5 x 11 sheet (each sector a little over 3" x 4"), the entire 128-sector Charted Space map (as shown in FFE001 and the two CT Library Data volumes) would fit on an approx. 3' x 4' poster. If this could be printed in such a way that by using a magnifying glass the world data would actually be legible (it's not on a standard laser-printed version) this would be truly awesome.

What about a series of cards (standard playing card size and stock, no I'm NOT suggesting a CCG) each one showing in the standard map format a nice big graphic of one space hex, and on the opposite the system details for that hex. You could buy them in packs of 80 (a subsector). You could 'deal' them out as players need them, or put them up on a wall, for a subsector map some 80" by 140" :D

OK, that's a little overboard, how about each card is a subsector, marketed as packs of 16 cards (sector) or boxes of 64 (domain). Put them on the wall and build a mural of your travels. If a sector changes enough (borders etc.) or more are detailed you just print new expansion packs. This idea could well work and be marketable. All I ask before someone runs out and makes a mint like this is I get included in the fun ;)

I like the idea for cards and another alternative would be to market them under certain empires , i.e: Solomani , The Empirium , Zhondani, etc :D

I've thought about trying to design a program in the past to take all of the system data and place it on a map. In theory, the idea is simple. It's just a database, and the map would be drawn from the information. I'll have to see if I can find what I did with the ideas. Maybe we could stick our heads together and figure out how to do this. I figure there really are only 4 or 5 views you would ever need. System, Subsector, Sector, Region, and Charted Space. Make it printable and all you ever need again is a printer. It would probably take forever typing and proofreading all of the data, but hey, I'm up for a challenge.

Also looks like there are a couple of maps on this page: Stuff Online

As an old Traveller player, I have, in my possessions, a series of charts showing most of Traveller's known space.

It came from various publications from the old Traveller game companies, mainly GDW and DGP.

I don't have a scanner...yet. Once my income tax return comes in, I plan to rectify that situation. As these charts are all in hardcopy.

They don't show systems, I only have about 75% of that data, but they do show the national borders from every government - except for the Zhodani Consulate. I don't have that data...yet.

GDW, years ago, had a poster map of all known space in the Traveller Universe. I wonder if FFE reprinted this as of yet. DOes anyone know???

How bout a good, Solid, Map (or series of maps) Printed on that plastic that you can write on with a dry erase marker (or grease pencil for you purists) and i mean the good plastic that doesnt retain marks. I think I saw a calendar made out of the stuff at staples for like 5.oo... (3'x4'?)

I put the biggest map of the Marches I could find on the web thru a digital projector, on the wall of the garage using an ad hoc screen made from a huge tarp from home depot... it Rocked!!!

Is my memory fading, or didn't GDW put out a map that covered most of known space (to the Imperium anyway) that included the Dark Nebula subsector, most of Vargr space, Hiver space, ZHO, and Aslan, as well as some uncharted areas... seems that map is what you are looking for.

Or am I thinking to small here?

'Anyone seen my ship? I thought I left it on pad 29, but there a Type-TJ sitting there now?'

Are you thinking of "Atlas of the Imperium" that GDW produced? A4 soft cover square systems rather than hexes?

If not I want one of what you're talking about :D

Your thinking small. Consider a map like the one in the new version of the Imperium game. You could have something like that for Known Space, with significant details on, say, a dozen VERY MAJOR systems [like Capital, Terra, Vland, Zhodane, etc].
You could also have a small inset map showing the location of Known Space in relation to the Milky Way Galaxy. And it could be all in color and glossy. Oh yeah. yeah. YES YES YES! Oh, excuse me.

Got a name for that ship? Detached Duty eh. So your flying a Type S. You sure your at the right Starport? How bought checking pad 92; you know, its easy to get those numbers confused.
