"101" Vehicles

I think a Vehicles book is do-able by simpletons such as myself (plus one heck of a good illustrator such as Tim Osborne), thanks to VehicleMaker and ThingMaker, and so on.

The question in my mind is, what vehicles should be done?

Obviously the CT vehicles -- including the water-ships -- and MT tanks. DGP's 101 Vehicles can inspire as well, as can other vehicle books out there.

The book would also have to list vehicle-mount weapons, of course.

Groundcars (regular, luxury, James Bond)
Air/Raft (open, enclosed, other)
Speeders
Transports (wheeled, grav, etc) x (passenger, cargo, etc)
ATV (tracked, wheeled) x (armored, long range)
Hovercrafts
Cargo Lifters
"Movers"
(Carrier, Tank, Vehicle) x (Grav, Tracked, etc) x (various options)
Airplanes
Helicopters
LTAs
'Thopters
(Ship, Sub, Boat) x (Patrol, Cargo, Exploration, etc)

As a tribute to DGP, I think 105 Vehicles is almost do-able by simpletons such as myself (plus one heck of a good illustrator such as Tim Osborne), thanks to VehicleMaker and ThingMaker, and so on.

The question in my mind is, what vehicles should be done...

How about "slaved" vehicles (Trains [rail, monorail, road, grav etc.] and "trailers" [rail, road, grav etc.])

I can see a real need for air raft cargo trailers. Also, grav platforms to lift, and move, cargo to and from ships, and in and out of the same.

The question in my mind is, what vehicles should be done, and is 105 vehicles reasonable?

Huh, I guess there is enough room for 105 separate vehicles, but it looks like they're variations on ten or twenty basic types.

Air/Raft, open
Air/Raft, enclosed
ATV, tracked
ATV, wheeled
Carrier, military personnel
GCarrier
GCarrier, slow
Groundcar, wheeled
Groundcar, luxury
Hovercraft
Hovercraft, light
Lift Transport, passenger / cargo
Lift Vehicle, light duty
Lift Vehicle, heavy duty
Mover, tracked
Speeder, recon
Speeder, standard
Tanks <tracked, lift, grav> x <large, small, fast, slow, heavy, etc>
Military Vehicles <supply, troop, recon> x <grav, lift, air cushion, tracked, wheeled...>
Flapper Flyer <e.g. ornithopter>
LTA Flyer <zeppelin, blimp, balloon>
Rotor Flyer <whirlybird, apache>
Winged Flyer <DC3, business jet, bomber>
Watercraft <cargo, explorer, patrol, transport>

I have a lot of that in my copyright-free data files already. For some if it, it would depend if you would want to use WW2 era line drawings of equipment, or want new ones. For the Grav vehicles, you have all of the material in the existing Traveller books to draw on plus the Journal illustrations, which presumably are under Marc's copyright. As for Watercraft, how far back in Tech do you want to go?

And did anyone ever do a vehicle for the DUKW? Or the LARC?

I sent DonM some samples of what I have, Robject. Should I send you the packet as well?

You can do fairly generic vehicles that represent a class of vehicles, like family sedans or long ranged air/rafts. Fitting them out with sensors and equipment makes them into more recognizable vehicle lines, brands, or models.

Maybe do an entry for each "class" of vehicle with examples of some fully fleshed out with sensors and equipment and quirks.

Thats a great idea, using the Slave option to represent trains and trams and other rail and guided vehicles.

I came up with a way of doing trailers which I thought I'd posted but it seems not.

Trailers
Something missing from VehicleMaker is a method for designing trailers. Here’s my take on it.

Code Descriptor TL Tons Speed Load KCr
TLR Trailer - 2 - 2 10

Rules:
You may apply any Mission from Table G Ground Vehicles or Table M Military Vehicles.

You must apply a Motive descriptor from either of these tables. Speed becomes maximum safe towing speed.

From Table 12 Vehicle Enhancers you may apply any Bulk modifier and any Environ modifier.

From Options you may apply: Weapons Mount, Luxury, Passenger Module, Cargo Module, or Off Road.

Trailers take their Speed rating from the towing Vehicle.

Grav and Lift vehicle may only tow Grav and Lift Trailers.

I’m leaving out Stage effects because trailer technology doesn’t vary as much as other vehicles.

Question for you: Should a trailer impose a penalty to Speed? Say Speed -1?

I did a pretty complete set of vehicles as part of the Traveller's Aides for T20, including interesting color text. I went back to try and rebuild the vehicles with the T5 VehicleMaker rules, and found them ... lacking. The rules are designed around a very narrow idea of "vehicle", presuming that anything that didn't fit would be pushed to ThinkMaker or something else.

I'd love to take the T20 vehicles I built, plus the hundred or so more I have in various forms, and add them to the pile. But the VehicleMaker rules won't support most of them.

How amenable are people here to adding a number of modifications to the VehicleMaker rules to allow them to work for a larger range of vehicles?

[VehicleMaker] rules are designed around a very narrow idea of "vehicle" [...]

You're right. It does have a focus. I don't think that's necessarily a problem - especially since an independent author could conceivably extend VehicleMaker to widen the set in places as needed.

Anyone have the vehicle list from The Traveller Book or Imperial Encyclopedia handy?

Just realised that my 101 Vehicles document is up under the house rules section of this forum. Not sure how to link it to here, can't find the link address on the file, but you can check it out there.

A trailer always causes a reduction in speed (or higher fuel consumption). I'd even assume this would be true for grav and lift, even though friction (air) is a negligible addition.

I'm glad to see people thinking in this direction.

Nuts. Yes, please send Rob the packet, and resend it to me because I'm NOT at home this weekend, and apparently did NOT grab the right flash drive.

Okay, will do, Don. Just have to remember which computer it is on. I know have a Traveller license, so it might be interesting. If we include some more wet navy ships and additional aircraft, it could be a lot more than 101 Vehicles.
