William Stockton - term 1

I've always loved to use Character Generation to create a good story and help define a memorable character. The concept for this character is a man with one term in the Army and three terms in the Merchants.

William Stockton

1075 – William Matthew Stockton born to a military family on an early interstellar tech world. The small, remote and semi-closed community of ‘Army Families’ somewhat restricted his opportunities to obtain a ‘liberal education’, but he still managed to gain a working familiarity with the technology of everyday life (Computer-0; Wheeled Vehicle-0) and of military life (Gun Combat-0).

FIRST TERM: Learning the Art of War (1093 – 1096)

1093 – William Stockton (age 18) follows in the family tradition and enlists in the planetary army to begin four years of mandatory service. Basic Training offers nothing new to William (he spent the first 18 YEARS of his life ‘policing his quarters’ and standing for ‘uniform inspections’) and he easily qualifies as a Combat Rifleman. Advanced Infantry Training allows William to pick up some skill in Reconnaissance.

1094 – Anti-government rebels begin operating openly in the remote mining regions, and Pvt. Stockton is assigned Cross Training as a scout for a Mechanized Cavalry unit engaged in Counter Insurgency operations. Unfortunately, the unit spends more time battling the elements and their old equipment than the rebels, granting William some Mechanical skills from the experience.

1095 – The unrest has spread and the rebellion is gaining wider support among the general population. The government responds with a major new military offensive. Combat between the Army and the Rebels escalates as both sides begin using Biological and Chemical warfare agents. Pvt Stockton is returned to the Infantry and assigned to a series of Police Actions designed to crush the rebel enclaves. William distinguishes himself during one operation when the unit commander is wounded in an ambush. While using his Combat Armor to shield the wounded officer from small arms fire, Pvt Stockton systematically eliminates the enemy shooters. His actions earn him a decoration for Meritorious Conduct Under Fire (MCUF) and all the time spent buttoned up in Combat Armor grants William the Vacc Suit skill.

1096 – The rebellion gains widespread popular support with vast regions now under rebel control. Pro-government forces are driven back on every front and struggle to maintain control of key cities and facilities. By the start of the year, the toll from the civil war has risen above 100,000 killed. Pvt Stockton is assigned to a series of military Raids against key targets held by the Rebels. Most of his time is spent as a sniper operating in enemy territory and eliminating Rebel leaders. During the fall of one of the major Government strongholds, Pvt Stockton remained behind to defend a Landing Zone (LZ) thus allowing the evacuation of key military personnel and earning him a Medal for Conspicuous Gallantry (MCG) and a Purple Heart. William was captured by the Rebels, but escaped while being transported to a holding facility for interrogation. Later that year, when the rebels storm The Palace, William is among the troops that escort the leader through the rebel held streets and to the relative safety of the Starport.

Epilogue
The Imperium offers sanctuary to the surviving government officials and troops as the most expeditious means to restore peace to the system (the toll has risen to just over 1 million killed – about 25% of the total population). William Stockton is tried in absentia, convicted of war crimes and sentenced to death on his home world. He petitions the Imperium for status as a Political Refugee and requests Imperial Citizenship. After an inquiry into the charges by the IISS Intelligence Branch (the result of a controversial decision within the Imperial government concerning jurisdiction), William is found not-guilty of war crimes under Imperial law and his status and citizenship are granted.

SECOND TERM: A Phoenix Rises from the Ashes (1097 – 1100)

1097 – No one is ever interested in a ‘war hero’ from the loosing side, and by this point, William has seen enough killing to last a lifetime. When the Sun Dancer arrives to evacuate the ‘personal effects’ of the wealthy refugees, William Stockton (age 22) is able to convince her Captain that Mechanical and Vacc Suit skills qualify him as a ‘spacer’.

Sun Dancer
A 2000 dTon Subsidized Freighter, capable of Jump-4 and operated for the benefit of the Navy. During times of peace, the ship follows the X-Boat routes carrying the low-profit bulk cargoes that tend to get passed up by smaller merchants and accumulate. In time of war, the ship and her crew are subject to being pressed into service as a fleet tender. These ships are considered Vital Strategic Resources and are maintained without regard to their ability to generate a profit. The possibility of being called into a war zone at any time and the low probability of generating a ‘bonus’ means that these ships are almost always short-handed.

William is signed up for a 4 year term to a Large Merchant Line as an (apprentice) ‘Assistant Drive Hand’ in the ship’s Engineering Department but is maintained on a very short leash and given only minor maintenance tasks. The constant drilling by experienced spacers and the generally dull routine of servicing a fixed route, leave William with plenty of time and incentive to learn the Merchant Service Regulations and pass the Merchant Service exam to become officially certified as an ‘Assistant Drive Hand’.

1098 – With his certification papers and a year under his belt, William is finally treated like a real ‘spacer’ with a lot less supervision and slightly more complex maintenance duties. He gains some experience with Electronics, and successfully passes his Merchant Service exam for certification as a ‘Drive Hand’.

1099 – The Sun Dancer plods up and down the X-Boat Routes and William performs the same old routines as he continues to kill time in Engineering with little opportunity to improve his skills. He also becomes somewhat discouraged as he discovers that there are vast gaps in his formal education and experience that prohibit him from advancing further in the Merchant Service.

1100 – With the end of his term quickly approaching, the Chief Engineer sits William down for his mandatory ‘what are you going to do with your life’ talk and obligatory pitch about signing on for another term. After several uncommonly frank discussions between Deck Hand Stockton and Chief Engineer Hobbs, William is promised help with his career in exchange for another term of service – he signs on the dotted line with ten months still left on his current contract. Chief Engineer Hobbs arranges immediate access to company paid training courses, allowing William to study ‘Basic Ship Operations’, ‘Merchant Law’, and ‘Management’. William is given more supervisory responsibility, gaining both theoretical and practical experience in Administration, and is now marked as a ‘lifer’ in the Merchant Service.

THIRD TERM: A Road Less Traveled (1101 – 1104)

1101 – William Stockton remains on the Sun Dancer and begins helping the Assistant Engineers with repairs to the Power, Maneuver and Jump Systems. Responding well to the ‘hands on’ style of training and learning quickly, he impresses his supervisors and gains skill in Starship Engineering, but fails to pass the Merchant Service exams. William does not become certified as an ‘Engineer’. In his personnel file is a letter written by Chief Engineer Gregory Hobbs recommending that Drive Hand William Stockton be transferred to another ship to gain more ‘real world’ experience in order that he might one day “fulfill his full potential”.

1102 –The ship’s owners follow the recommendation of the Chief Engineer and Drive Hand William Stockton is transferred to a much smaller ship, the Luck O’ the Draw, currently scheduled for an Exploratory Trade run to attempt to open up new markets.

Luck O’ the Draw
A 40 year old 400 dTon Fat Trader, specially modified for long duration missions.

On such a small ship, William is the ship’s only Engineer and needs to regularly work double shifts just to keep the old ship running. This provides all of the ‘real world’ engineering experience anyone could ask for, but leaves no time to study anything new. However, all of William’s hard work and natural ability do not go unnoticed by the captain [well connected, scheduled to retire at the end of the year, and planning to take ownership of a repossessed Far Trader]. Captain McGreggor receives the blessings of the Luck O’ the Draw’s owners to ‘borrow’ William for a year to help get his ship off to a good start.

1103 – William follows Captain McGreggor to his new ship. Although only certified as a Drive Hand, William becomes “the engineer” of the Belle of the Ball [a 200 ton Far Trader]. With bank payments looming over his head, the Captain/Owner is eager to take advantage of the insight gained in the previous year of Exploratory Trade and sets out on a daring plan to capitalize on the opportunities that the parent company wrote off as ‘too risky’. It will be a year of chasing Speculative Trade deals through Amber and Red Zones (some not officially classified as such, but they would have been if the TAS knew what the Captain knew).

Yet such High Risk, High Gain missions come at a cost. On more than one occasion, the takeoff or landing (or both) would involve some gunfire – from small arms to heavy weapons to turret weapons. William quickly added ‘repair battle damage’ to his growing list of ‘real world’ engineering experiences. Several serious clashes with Pirates and Privateers would provide William with chances to keep his Army skills sharp and provide him with the chance to gain proficiency in Zero G Combat. The Speculative Trade missions would ultimately prove successful, allowing the owner to pay off his ship and reward the crew with a nice bonus.

1104 – At the close of his 1 year loan, William returns to the Large Merchant Line holding his contract and is assigned to the Shangri-La. William immediately retakes the Merchant Service exam and is certified as an Assistant Engineer.

Shangri-La
A sister ship to the Sun Dancer, this 2000 dTon Super Liner is capable of Jump-4. During times of peace, the ship follows the X-Boat routes between Sector Capitals carrying VIPs in luxury. In time of war, the ship and her crew are subject to being pressed into service as a troop transport, hospital ship or mobile ‘liberty port’ for the main fleet.

The Shangri-La is a new ship and requires almost no maintenance, but the 6G VIP Launches are another matter. The combination of high performance Grav-Drives and the expectation of flawless inertial compensation give Assistant Engineer Stockton plenty of opportunity to fine tune his skill at balancing Gravitics. The next year appears to hold no openings for an Assistant Engineer within the company, so William leaves the Large Merchant Line at the end of the term.

William Stockton - term 4

FOURTH TERM: The Best Laid Plans (1105 – 1108)

1105 – Assistant Engineer Stockton is hired on by the New Horizons, currently scheduled for a series of routine trade runs along an established route.

New Horizons
A 400 dTon Fat Trader newly re-commissioned by a Fledgling Line.

The ‘milk runs’ give William plenty of time to whip his Engineering Room into shape and struggle through more Engineering theory via remote College Courses. The study pays off when he passes his Merchant Service exam and is certified as a full ‘Engineer’.

1106 – Although the Engine Room has never run better, the Fledgling Line folds and the ship is repossessed by the bank. When the bank is not immediately able to locate a new buyer, they decide to maintain the ship as operational and charter it out until a buyer can be located. William is retained as the ship’s Engineer. The year is filled with a string of short charters, usually supporting some get-rich-quick scheme. Since the bank is unwilling to risk its asset on anything but the most well-established routes, the year passes uneventfully.

1107 – The New Horizons is finally purchased at a good price by an anonymous ‘merchant combine’ in a cash transaction. The ship is renamed Snake Eyes and William stays on as ship’s Engineer. The ship continues to follow the routine trade routes while quietly being refitted with used 'Military Grade’ electronics designed to grant some stealth and extensive ECM/Jamming capabilities. William is too busy just trying to keep up with all of the refiting, repairs and unavoidable conflicts which must be resolved to get much formal study time and fails the Merchant Service exam. Towards the end of the year, the refitted Snake Eyes begins to show a high profit potential and William is smooth talked into investing his savings into the ship’s trading venture.

1108Snake Eyes continues to follow established Trade Routes and generate profits, until a series of 'deals gone bad' pushes the ship to the brink of bankruptcy around mid year. The ship quietly rebuilds its operating capital and lands a VERY successful deal in an Amber Zone early in the fourth quarter. Several quiet trade runs around the middle of the 4th quarter provide William with the time to pass his Merchant Service exam and receive certification as a Chief Engineer.

Since a ship as small as the Snake Eyes barely warrants the services of a certified full ‘Engineer’, it would clearly not require a certified ‘Chief Engineer’ – William was not expected to to re-enlist with the ship at the end of this term. The ship’s owners terminate William’s employment two weeks before the end of his contract and execute a seldom used clause allowing the ship to keep his back pay and bonus “in the event that the employee fails to complete his full contract time.” Since he has been 4 months without liberty, his accumulated back pay, bonus and investment shares amounts to a fair sum of money. William is stranded penniless on Feri.

Strangely, the ship appears to suffer some Jump drive malfunction that the newly hired ‘Assistant Engineer’ seems unable to repair. Charges of ‘unfair practices’ and ‘professional incompetence’ are exchanged. Rumors of sabotage circulate the whisper net of Engineer and Spacer circles, but nothing can be clearly determined – one way or the other.

You see? That's the problem with the Merchant Services' Certification policies; you can fake the full skill compliment on a remote-administered testing system. Because those bastiges that screwed him out of his due should've been strewn across several parsecs as a new shower of radioactive tachyons, not just suffering from "some jump drive malfunction."

I'll have the noble based on the song "Spacelord" by Monster Magnet up shortly...B-D
