Where did all the air come from!

Puh-lease! Any serious and experienced Traveller brings their own VaccSuit. You know it will function properly and is of course tailored to you. Check for a VaccSuit, geez, what nugget thing to say. :p

In this game, my character was broke and couldn't buy one ahead of time...

I had one by the time we arrived at our destination though, thanks to a group of pirates that raided us... ;)

Many a spacer is down on his luck and has not functional vacc suit. It's reasonable to expect a long term contract to include at least an LDVS as a condition of employment.

Oh, you poor dears.

My apologies.

I do sometimes forget that there are so many Travellers without means. I blame Soceity. Still, you'd think with all those former Navy, Scouts, Merchants and Marines traveling the stars they would have one from their former service.

Then I suppose there are the poor one Term Travellers I keep forgetting about. Yeesh, there must be millions of Travllers without a personal VaccSuit. Maybe we should start The Poor Spacer VaccSuit Foundation. Or better dice for rolling Mustering Out Benefits. :)

Heh, actually this game I speak of was in a MgT Living Traveller game. One of the reasons why I didn't like playing it was the point buy system. Typically the characters ended up without all the benefits that a typical Traveller would end up with.

But yea, when I make up characters I usually make sure I take at least one Cash benefit roll... ;)

Point based?

what is this heresy you speak of? I mean the way you are speaking one would think that you don't get Mustering Out gear or rolls. Egads, sir, that such a misfortune should befall you. Truly, I am aghast.

Well, that's what you get with variants. :p

Yea, the only reason that I was playing it was to support a friend who was GMing it. Our game group tends to support each other when we GM at our local Cons. It just re-enforced my opinion of Point Buy systems and how much I really like the standard MGT CharGen.

Good on you for supporting your friend the heretic, I mean they need love too. As for your MgT CharGen, around here we just call that standard Traveller CharGen.

I am confused.

Yea, well, I'm quite aware of the differences between CT and MgT, which is why I was being precise... ;)
So, you are saying that MgT has a point based CharGen as part of their main rules? Gak! What an awful and heretical idea. Ick. Well, that will keep me from being a fan of their Traveller. *shudders* Well, if that is what the new kids want, but me I will stick the luck of my dice. Besides if I wanted point based I would just run another GT game which does have pretty pictures, nice chrome and I already own some of.

Marines in Some flavors don't get to keep the issued vacc suit - it's their combat armor.

Scout uniform is semi-canonically the tailored TL15 vacc suit. The only reason they get to keep it is that scouts in canon never actually leave the scout service honorably while alive. It's dead or dishonored. And no ruleset actually supports them keeping it except by buying it.

It's a half-page option in the core rulebook.

Actually, MgT does have a point based character generation system. MgT main rule book p 40. Its an option for generating characters, I will also note that they also include the Iron Man option for character generation as well, where if you fail a survival role, your character is dead and you start over.

As I've said before, I use Timelords, which is a point-buy system. But I also wanted careers. So I give a base amount of points to buy attributes at 18, then roll careers to see what the character's prior history is. Based on those rolls, I know how many years worth of points to give the player to improve stats and buy skills. They also can sacrifice points to buy rolls on the mustering out tables. IMO, straight point-buy works for starting characters, but handicaps building experienced ones for anyone not an experienced role-player with a bent for writing. I can write a backstory and buy a character that fits, but roll-players typically can't.

It's an Alternate CharGen, clearly marked as Optional and not part of the Regular CharGen.

I apologize for the thread drift and my part in it. I'd love to continue to discuss MgT, but if anyone wants to continue, let's take it to another thread... :)
