What's it sound like?

...A thought: what damned good is suppressive fire that can neither be seen or heard? :smirk:

Precisely!

There are times you want to make a racket so they keep their heads down, and there are times you want to get in and out with as little noise as possible.

I'm pretty sure the selectable power gauss weapon is canon, from TNE FF&S if not earlier.

As well as tunable lasers for much the same effect.

And each affect range, damage, penetration and such.

Yes, and further, there would likely be subsonic needles for the gauss rifles to keep this degradation of performance to a minimum. Likely a little less battery and a LOT more needle.

If the sound comes from breaking the sound barrier, how would the different atmospheres effect this? Would it be muffled in Dense or Louder?

LOUDER. Cum difference in liquid vs. gas for sound transmission.

Of course here's the rub, Far Trader: how do we do a healthy suppressive fire with gauss in a vacuum? We need exploding proximity rounds, or tracers at least.

And what about "setting for stun?" The whole tranq thing always seemed such a wan patch for such a glaring omission from canon.

My thoughts went to what a needle round ricochet would sound like. Especially the tubular round.
Maybe the rounds could be more complex. Coiled wires round a core with capacitor charge triggering an opposite thrust against the launchers thrust. Off the top of my head (ouch my brain hurts) as it were.
