• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

What area would you like to see T5 set in.

Pick a sector that has never been used ... probably near the core.

... ANYWHERE BUT the Spinward Marches!
Enough reheated SM already, let's try writing something new (MJD is probably up to the task).

How many of the Coreward sectors are already reserved by the OTU and not available for licensing?

How about:

Fornast
Trojan Reaches
Vanguard Reaches
The Beyond
Far Frontiers
Fulani
Tsadra
Astron

Most of these are to spinward of the Marches but I don't think they'd work because of the limitations of the OTU under Mongoose licensing.
If we go too far to coreward, we may be stepping on Vargyr and Zhodani paws/toes. Same with the Rimward Two Thousand Worlds.

You mean like Sanity?

Not directly. Although a low score could mean that someone cracks up easier. Trying to think of a good word.... Kinda like willpower. Could cover psionic mod, sanity, ability to follow through on difficult/tedious/lengthy tasks. How distracted someone gets if they are trying to repair something while under fire, Scouts might require it as they must endure isolation for long periods of time.

TNE's determination touchés a little on this idea
I thin k there is an unfortunate duality to SS that lends an easy misinterpretation to its uses. Here's my take on the two (two) conflicting issues presented by a high or low social standing

1). SS is the source of an honorific title or an indication of nobility
2). SS enables the referee and players to make reaction rolls in a situation that requires negotiation or verbal skills (steward, carousing, fast-talk, determination)

I think that sanity is a good attribute

It is better as RP back round rather than a fixed attribute. Outside of a certain society it is pretty meaningless. Even in the 3I different worlds will have such different customs & standards of manners (see Earth today) nothing but the title would come into play.

I wouldn't want a mere rehash of old Spinward Marches information, but I would welcome anything that expanded on the information we have (including a few revisions to fix various errors here and there). A sourcebook about the Duchy of Regina, for example. Or a reissue of The Traveller Adventure or Sword Worlds without the mistakes. Or a sourcebook about Regina, especially if I could sneak in my own material about that world.

Or the Spinward Marches in other milieux, Milieu 200 (Age of Exploration), Milieu 400 (Age of Expansion), Milieu 600 (Civil War), Milieu 800 (Psionic Suppressions), or Milieu 1000 (3rd Frontier War).

There's tons of stuff to write about the Spinward Marches without reheating anything.

Sounds like D&D or Runequest. I just use INT (or END if it's physical stress) for that, rather than strip away SOC from the game.

I don't know if there's an official setting, per se.

Greg Lee's adventure is targetted for the Spinward Marches somewhen around 1100-1109 or thereabouts, and uses T5.

Craig A. Glesner's Abonai Adventure is in his homebrew Permatic Imperium setting, and his Herald-class starship sheet is targetted for the Third Imperium ca. 1100 or so.

The Mongoose Traveller sector books are typically written from the Year 1100 point of view, and are largely rules-agnostic for the purposes of adventure settings (in other words, folks, they're just fine for Traveller5).

Ok, while this post is based on some not-so-public knowledge, it represents where I personally plant my OTU flag, and not Marc's (or Rob's) or anyone else's positions...

1. I want a set of core rules without a setting, except where necessary for explanations. T5 is close to that. I did try to persuade Marc to drop the "OTU explanation" chapter for more rules space, but lost that discussion.

2. I want some milleu set as a baseline, well defined enough for a newbie referee to play in. 1105 will serve as that, despite a LOT of consideration for moving the timeline forward.

3. I want a solid set of explanations for manipulating that baseline forward and backwards, based on a cleaned up (reimagined is too strong a word) timeline. When I think of how this should work, I'm thinking of a heavily modified version of Jason Kemp's "Alternate Collapse/Recovery System" from Stellar Reaches #5, but able to move forward and backward from 1105 data to 1248 (and beyond) and backwards to Milleu Zero and Interstellar Wars. YMMV. Jason already knows I like his system, and I tried to make Rob and Marc look at it a bit (Ok, I made Marc look at it. I can't drive to Rob's house and do that. Well, perhaps I could, but that would take more than a couple of hours and lunch at Noodles.)

4. For an OTU book for T5, there's some fan material I would want to include. I should probably start a list. Heck, there's some articles from Andy Slack from the old White Dwarf stuff... Some things from the Traveller Chronicles... actually, I'd want open a topic on COTI for people to submit items they liked, and I'd go searching for the author to get permission to edit/modify/update their stuff. I'd want "nothing off limits". The first book needs to have material in it to get a new referee able to build a 3i-feeling game after a good read-through without having an OTU expert at his side.

5. Other supporting material? I miss the days of HIWG, of Tiffany Star and The Imperium Staple, but that's probably not possible given today's copyright laws.

Hmm... too much rambling here.

I do agree with Hans -- I think the possibilities of the Spinward Marches have hardly been touched.

6. I can openly say that T5 will start the timeline moving forward again. I can't say when that will start, but it will happen. And it will include TNE and 1248. Broadly, those items are all canon. Bits here and there might be edited to better fit the 1105 baseline, but "Charted Space" (that's the official name for the official setting of the OTU) will begin moving forward in time again.

7. I'm hoping the OATU (the Official Alternate Traveller Universe) starts moving forward again... It can also benefit from a better fit with the T5 1105 baseline.

 I have not heard this term before. What is the Official Alternate Traveller Universe?

Naw, Soc isn't an attribute like the others. Anymore than your bank balance is. One can have an I.Q. of 160 and fold like a cheap tent under pressure so that makes no sense.

INT is more than just I.Q. in Traveller. It's a nice system that some players think they need to over-engineer.

1105 will serve as that...

This is what I have heard for a while now and I am fine with that. My campaign is set in six sectors I have made and in 1323, it is "all canon". However, with around 800mb of material, changing seems somewhat ridiculous at this point. As a player, I am playing in two campaigns, one starting in Glisten in 1108 and the other, the GM being the writer of the new TCS, is generally set in the 1100's 3I but an ATU.

Yes, problem solving, etc. Not what I'm talking about at all.

INT is still more than that. Even games written for Traveller know to use the 6 characteristics. But sure, if it's not Traveller you're playing, like GURPS or D20 Traveller, then you will find all kinds of other attributes and character stats that Traveller has to be re-worked into.
