Weird question about starships and goblins..

Hi there, sorry if this is in the wrong spot.

The last time I've played Traveller was perhaps 25 years ago, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details (played alot of Azhanti High Lightning, too, but I digress).

In chatting with someone online, he insisted that now it's pretty common for every character to get a starship capable of orbital bombardment as soon as he's rolled up, and to go to a planet with sword-wielding goblins and nuke them all for easy kills (presumably for the experience).

I sure don't recall the game playing that way.

Is this really what Traveller is like nowadays?

Thanks!

No, it isn't.

Essentially, under TNE, it was possible to get a larger ship than in classic, but really, it's not changed the accessible ships much at all for starting PC's.

Mongoose Traveller has a system where a large enough party could get a smallish warship (ca 5000Td), but you'd need 20+ PC's with lucky rolls and loads of stars on their shoulders...

Welcome aboard Doomboy314 :D

Wow, was that a flashback ;) I've played in a couple odd games but not that one. Close but not quite.

I'm with aramis, Traveller is still probably very much the way you recall it, but... a ref could if they wanted (and I've known a couple) bend the rules to whatever bizzarro fiction they wanted. That's what this sounds like to me. More power to them if it's the way they have fun. It's not my Traveller but I won't judge them for colouring outside the lines, waaay outside the lines, all the way in another book, in another country :)

For the current iteration you should see what Mongoose is doing with the game. Again, not exactly my taste but not as extreme as Dreadnaughts and Goblins.

No, that's completely false. Traveller goblins are yellow-skinned. Not green.
