Rules Only: Using Firefly/Cortex Plus rules for Traveller

I used the Serenity rules - original Cortex - to run Traveller. The new version should work just as well.

Your conversion looks pretty good.

How are you going to handle character generation?

The Firefly game really is a wholly different kind of game from the Serenity Rules.

Things that Serenity and Traveller do that FF does not:
give limits on cargo space (hell, tell you how much space there is)
deal with cash
have a detailed combat system
Have rule for T&C

If one's wanting to do a Merchantile game with a focus on the business side of things, FF can't and won't be a good choice. Serenity isn't a bad one, but Traveller has better rules still.

If T&C is merely a McGuffin to get you into the real story, the FF is the better choice.

I've had the pdf version of Firefly since you recommended it a couple of months ago Aramis :)

The only key difference I can see between Cortex based Serenity and Cortex+ based Firefly is tha later is more obviously influenced by FATE. Otherwise very similar. Increased die size represent better "asset", assemble a dice pool from relevant assets (Cortex + is better for this bit) keep best 2, everything else is narrative fluff :)

My group prefers the cortex version of Serenity, they don't like (can't get into their thick heads) how Cortex+ and FATE "assets" (use favourite term here) work. Narative is not for them.

I guess we are a bunch of OSG...

Thanks. We are meeting this week to get started. For attributes, I think the players will start with all d8 and be able to adjust upward, if they step down another attribute. For skills, I'm thinking of running a CT character generation and convert to reasonable equivalent of skills and distinctions.

Was planning on layering money and trade (e.g. ship specs and cargo) on top of the core rules, just taking that information from existing CT material. With our crew, it's more about the RP than trying to run a business.

What is T&C?
