Ursa & Apes & 'Fins...oh, my !

Nurd_boy

SOC-13
Following a recent thread about uplifting critters (and the description of Ursa in the TH) I got to thinking (yes, THATS where the wood burning smell came from...sheez) about GEN-ASSIST and what "other" critters could be uplifted. So, with DnD's monster manual (3.0 ed) in hand....

O.R.C. (O-riginal R-esearch C-ase) In an attempt to create a source of human-compatable blood, tissue and organs for medical uses the predecessors to gen-assist attemptd to spliced human DNA into a domesticated porcine creature...
<later>
...results proved promising in early testing. So in subsequent generations of the experiment we will replace more base DNA with human DNA into subject genome...
<later>
...Subject specimens have proven unviable as medical sources and apear unmanagable do to an emergent tendancy to aggression.
<later>
...block 16 theta has been destroyed, security forces around section 7a, 9d and 4b have been overrun...my god, how did we create SO many of them?...

ok, it's not very good, but sitting here at 11:45pm pacific, with books in hand (er, lap...)I had to get something down before I forget...

(a) this gives you the excuse to use the Gamorrean Star Wars minis ;)

(b) if you want a literary take on porcine humans in a scifi setting, take a look at Alasdair Reynolds' "Revelation Space" books. One of the characters in those stories - Scorpio - was an escaped pig/human splice, and he was a rather tough character... (whatever you do, don't piss him off)

D20 Modern / D20 Future has the Moreaus, Human/animal genesplices. Not pig-people, but they have feline, canine, dolphin and bear splices, I do believe, and if you have the Polyhedra issue where they explored the campign type more they have an orca splice in there, too. Lots of potential. So much so that I intend on using them in my 2320AD game (not the official game, my own personal game).

there has been work with making pigs "human compatable" on the news recently, I got to wondering what would happen if that was projected out.....and with the classic orc description, i do use d20 modern as my core rules, let me tinker a bit as see waht happens.

david brin's startide rising had a dolfin/orca blend as one of the antagonists on the human ship...

a) I had forgotten about those guys... :eek: {wondering how putting them in battledress would work?}

b) i'll have to go check that out..

DnD cataorizes creatures (aberations, outsiders, etc...) I was also thinking outsider creatures could live in a realms ships pass through/into during a jump (during the transition to jump space) the COULD be picked up as hickhikers/invaders...imagine a brain eater or intellect devourer loose on a ship? (say, a AHL or liner?)

better yet, a chaos beast?

yeah and you play it a la "alien the movie"

me think you going to be detested by your player

Moreaus, as mentioned earlier are gene-spliced humans with animals, O.R.C. (and their ilk) are technically the opposite, animals spliced with human genes to create an exploitable resourse (aka, ursa) my question is basically, what else from DnD could be traveller explainable and how/why?..could ogeres be like o.r.c. for heavy labor?...trolls are o.r.c. for tainted atmospheres?...hobgoblins are o.r.c. 'heavy troopers'?

let your imaginations fly free !!!

Dwarves in Space! There was an article in Dragon Magazine way back when giving the CT stats for Dwarves in Traveller.

d20F has a list in it somewhere of which MM entries the designers feel would fit into a sci-fi campaign, only minor modifications needed ;)

I guess what I'm beating around the bush about is using DnD monsters with a traveller justification...
how about:
O.G.R.E.S.
O-ringinal G-roup R-esearch, E-cho S-series
Described as above...

lets hear some ideas !! <or I'll let the thread die..>

Re: Dwarfs in space - doesn't Traveller already have its quota of vertically challenged species? I'm thinking of the Geonee, particularly, before their rather ignominius demise at the hands of some racist Imperial noble in Margaret's faction during the Rebellion era?

I never got into playing rebellion or virus era...

I do remember Geoneee {kinda...}

I think the the movie 'lifepod' had genies, genetically engineeering dwarfs that worked engineering so they could get into small areas.

Yes, but the Dwarves in Space article pre-dated the appearance of the Geonee in print.

The Darrians are obviously the Elves... :rolleyes:

Nope...sorry, not gonna let it die just yet.
I KNEW your post rang a familiar bell, and I did a little digging through some old Twilight 2K adventures our group ran as part of our Traveller Megaverse Campaign.
I culled an idea from a book by Dean Ing ("Single Combat"...part of the Ted Quantrill trilogy), where scientists had bred and manipulated a hyper-intelligent wild boar - a beast of such cunning and boosted intelligence that it wreaked havoc on a devastated post-nuke American southwest.
Not QUITE an orc...but maybe a precursor who managed to escape (and possibly breed more monstrous hyper-intelligent boars...).

And here I thought O.R.C. Stood for Orc Rights Committee. Orcs are people too.
Lets sit down with them and understand them. (While they rip our heads off and....
