Unaswerable Questions...

William

SOC-13
Ok, right now we have going the revolver v. auto debate. Soon I'm sure we'll get the "one weapon" debate (shotgun myself, YMWV) and any of a dozen other debates that have no real answer because they depend on esthetics or philosophy or religion or any of a different dozen subjective qualifiers.

So, has anyone come up with the unanswerable questions that the folks in 1000 or 1100 sit around over a beer or three and creeb about? Or do your PS's just bitch about the same ol' same ol'?

William

I don't think it's really a debate at this point.
It began as a kind of 'why bother with revolvers?' progressed through to suggest that there are IC reasons why they would be bothered with and devolved into a lot of gun talk which is amusing for us gunheads and hopefully enlightening to the non-firearm-savvy

My own 'one gun' in traveller (in case my posts haven't made it clear) is the Snub Revolver.

As for unanswerable questions of the 5th millenium (I think 1100 is 53xx AD on the Solimani calender)...

Hmm...
Origin of Humaniti. For awhile there the location of the human homeworld was a guestion of some debate. I think the answer was found in 900 something but I could be wrong. for awhile it was a race between Terra and Cachalot.

That would lead immediatly to the socio-political derivitives (abuses) of the 'solimani' hypothesis. I could see debates raging about how effective the 2I or 'rule of man' was....debates about how moribund 1I or the Vilani Imperium was, fist fights guns drawn, local security called in... could get messy.

Wasn't 1000 around the time of the 'Barracks Emperors?" We are in the time either just after the unsettled period immediatly post assasination of Cleon the mad. OR a couple of generations away from the 4th frontier war. I think there was some Solimani upheaval around this time too.

I could see debates about the 'Right of ascension by assasination' I could see betting pools about how long THIS admiral-cum-Emperor will last. I could see consirarcy theorists claiming that the minister of justice didn't act alone when she shot Cleon and that it was all some sort of nefarious plot by secret ONI backed Psionists in the pay Zhondani funded Vargr insurgents.

I could see debates about the morality of 3I's colonial policy and just what makes an Imperial citizen better than your average backworlder muck.

oh yes and I'm sure there would be the standard debate on weather the Imperium should spend more on social programs or the Military. and within the military which branch needs the most money.

How's that for a start?

IIRC, according to Library Data, the Terran Origin hypothesis was pretty much accepted after the Third Imperium recontacted Terra after the Long Night, approxiamtely around 200(?)

That was in the 800's during the Civil War period. Year 1000 is right in the middle (okay, aabout two-thirds of the way through) the Solomani Rim War. Terra is just about to come under seige. And Cleon IV "The Mad" was in the 400's IIRC.

Not bad, but keep shecking your data against the Imperial Encyclopedia information to make sure you've got the timeline right.

Oops my bad. Looks like you caught me with my rules books down.

(and I'm VERY unlikey now to correct that with a new T20 purchase. I'm thankful now that I missed the pre-order. oh and that Star Wars book I was considering buying before I found out about T20 not buying that either. EVER. WotC SUCKS!!!)

I think my comments are valid for the time frame they are aimed at. Of course there's also a regional difference. the 1100's in Core sector are probably complacent, while most of The spinward marches probably feels more like Europe in the late thirties.

not that I really care right. (I'm sure I'll care later. Traveller is my first and longest RPG love.)

I'm amazed at how disapointing that news was....WotC...arg! What I want to say about WotC is ... Unprintable!!!

As for imponderables... I'd think the would wonder why the galaxy is just thousands of parsecs wide, thousands of parsecs long, but only one parsec thick.

....and The Civil War ran from 604 to 620. The Barracks Emperors were a subset of Emperors within the various claimaints to the throne during the Civil War.

Through the years, men have survived gut shot, head shot, lung shot even shots to the heart. But I have yet to hear of one surviving a sharp blade through the neck.

How is it that in the TL of the Imperium, that someone can get shot by a TL 6 bullet and still die? Medical technology should have advanced to the point where pretty much anything can be recovered from. Except maybe a head shot. I mean, at a certain tech level, the brain itself could be put on independent life support.

IMTU if you can get to a High Tech medical facility it's very unlikely that you'll die.

And if you can't make it to the facility, a quick freeze can preserve you for revival.

And if you can't be frozen, you're going to have roll up a new character. Hey, no one lives forever.

What's your particular beef against WOTC? I hope it's not the evil empire thing...

Yeah, I get kinda annoyed at people venting against WotC. It's like it's cool to do it, or something. They may not be perfect, and they may be a giant faceless corporation, but if you ask me, they've done some good things for gaming.

Anyone who rants about WotC and is buying a copy of T20 is insane.
