Trying to find a world

Daddicus

SOC-13
I'm trying to find a world for an adventure I'm writing. Ideally, it would have these 3 characteristics:

  • Interdicted
  • Not used in any already-published material
  • Industrial
  • Near a subsector or sector capital
  • Near a place that buys industrial-world goods

How would I go about finding one like that? I tried using search on the map site, but I couldn't figure out what keywords to use.

Any ideas?

Are you in any particular sector? That could narrow things down. I don't think you can search the map by TAS code but I could be wrong. I did a quick scan of the Spinward Marches using Second Survey data on the wiki and did not see any industrial worlds.

You are looking for a pretty rare bird.

If you search Traveller Map for "uwp:x???9??-?" and "uwp:x???A??-?" you should get a bunch of high-pop, interdicted worlds. Only those with atmospheres of 3, 5, 6, and 8 would *not* be Industrial. This gives a starting list of candidates. Here's what I got:

  • Surtun (Vanguard Reaches 2707 E100967-7)
  • Aoseie' (Ealiyasiyw 2225 X10097A-7)
  • Italaeaw (Iwahfuah 1518 X300989-7)
  • Hlahih (Aktifao 1032 X694A72-6)
  • Louis (Spica 2714 X310995-7)
  • Troaw (Hlakhoi 2514 X545976-5)
  • Lusky (Old Expanses 2838 X9479C7-5)
  • Mikik (Empty Quarter 0228 X540975-5)
  • Loki (Reaver's Deep 0212 X57599B-5)
  • Khea (Reaver's Deep 0733 X977A73-6)
  • Zabaloc (Reaver's Deep 0919 X675AAC-5)
  • Iristaorleih (Ustral Quadrant 0323 X776976-5)
  • Eweaeiakheal (Ustral Quadrant 1235 XA7A983-6)
  • Alef (Ley Sector 0820 X672978-5)
  • Hiwa'i (Uistilrao 3108 X591974-5)
  • Sirir (Gushemege 0131 X7969AA-5)
  • Rann (Diaspora 0206 X89A9AB-6)
Most appear to be outside the Imperium (I've bolded the ones I think are Imperial), but I have no idea if they are close to capitals -- you would have to manually check the location of the world.

I think Rann appeared in the Astrogator's Guide to Diaspora, but the other three don't look familiar. I'd check the wiki for that. Unfortunately, red zones are very popular for write-ups.

I can't think of a quicker way to cull through the data.

That first one, Surtun in Vanguard Reaches looks interesting. Size 1 planet with 9 billion people? No atmosphere? Hmm.

And just TL-7. I think they could just barely support that, and are probably heavily dependent on outsystem assistance.

Spartan: Any sector would do. I just don't want to use a planet for which there is other published information already in existence. (My hope is to eventually publish this.)

Garnfellow: Thanks! That's perfect for the interdicted & industrial. Cool!

More info: The adventure is a starting adventure for people new to Traveller 5 (and likely to Traveller, period). The players will go through chargen, and then what are basically tutorial steps for each of whatever skills they have. They'll learn how tasks work, and some of the basics of starship mechanics.

Near the end of the adventure, they will have dealt with a criminal organization (slavers, basically) on one planet & moon. Part of taking down the criminals will be determining the criminals' motives, which are financial. So, the players will learn the basics of the trade system as an aside to taking down the local godfather. But they'll also discover that there's another planet full of the criminals' buddies, and they're sending reinforcements.

The party will calculate that they're no match for the mob that's coming. So, their only choice is to exit the system, and the clock is ticking. The party has to cobble together parts and know-how to get a derelict starship's jump drive running again. They'll have to chase off a Pinnace that starts harassing them (very simply space combat, against what is basically an insect -- but an insect with large and numerous friends, who are not too far away!)

Then they jump to a world where there is an Imperial presence, so they can report the criminals' behavior. (The world is interdicted only to cover up the criminal slaver activities.)

I thought a subsector or sector capital would serve nicely, although any world with an Imperial presence officially in the system would work.

That one looks good, but it has to be close to the Imperium.

Does anybody know where to find the search syntax for the Traveller Map? I might be able to narrow the focus if I knew the syntax.

Thanks!

in the spinward marches there are no interdicted industrialized worlds. quite a few interdicted agricultural worlds though.

three that might fit your other specifications are heroni-natoko in rhylanor, and collace-pavabid/tarsus and forine-pagaton both in dist 268. forine-pagaton seems the best situation for your conditions.

imtu pagaton is the site of an enormous but silent trade war.

Since someone has to say it:

If you're just running a game, and not going to publish, then you can put just such a world anywhere you like. You can, for example, turn Ruie into that world.

** Ah, unless you're going to use TravellerMap as a resource for players. Hmm.

I had a similar need recently, I needed a world near the PCs that didn't exist. I ended up putting the adventure on a different planet in an existing system so I could make it whatever I wanted.

This also had an element of surprise for the group as they ended up somewhere they weren't expecting.

Instead of a small base of a few thousand they ended up on a heavy and radioactive desert planet with a huge indigenous population. The aliens and their planet weren't judged the primary world for the census.

My goal is to publish it as an intro-to-Traveller type adventure. But, since I've never published anything before, I realize that that's a dream, not fact.

I was going to create a stand-alone system, but then I got to thinking that the players might like their characters and party. If so, then they may want to start adventuring from where the intro adventure ends. So, having a real world seemed to make sense.

But, most of the action takes place on a partially-terraformed secondary planet and a domed moon base. So, I have quite a bit of leeway in terms of the mainworld; the secondary world can be whatever I make it, as long as I don't make it the mainworld.

Thanks, maksimsmelchak! Checking those now!

Welcome, mate.

You might want to check out the Traveller Wiki, which ahs increasingly expanded sector and world information. Very useful.

And, hey, say something if you like what you see. Updating the Wiki can be a relatively thankless job so it's good to hear something positive.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
