Triplanetary

Not a Traveller wargame as such, but definitely the forerunner to Mayday and LBB2 combat.

I've finally got a copy, and I love it.

It makes me think of TNE, with the limited maneuver fuel and deadly weapons.

Has anyone ever used it as the backdrop to a Traveller game, and are there any good house rule add-ons out there?

Thanks Casey

Hey Sigg

I have been going over the Triplanetary rules also. Have you noticed on Boardgame geeks the Cyberboard package? Check it out and read up on cyberboard. It would be great if we could game a couple of the scenarios PBEM with cyberboard.

There are extra rule variants on the Steve Jackson website. Also on boardgame geeks it lists a couple websites with variant rules.

Does anyone know if Steve Jackson ever ended up running that "Braunstein in Space" variant involving merchants, pirates and navy that he discussed on his site?

You can actually download the game over at BGG and Steve Jackson Games...just look for stuff related to Triplanetary.

The SJG site has a bunch of variant rules, counters, etc. There's a "big" map which looks quite nice, and comes with moveable planets.

Wow! I'm coming in late here but this is incredibly exciting! I know Steve Jackson's been looking to get the rights to the game for a long time. Last I checked, they were still in limbo.

I picked up Triplanetary about a year before I got Traveller. It was at a science fiction con. The shipping-container style box impressed nobody who walked up to the table next to the other games with art on their covers visible through the ziplock bags. I saw the title printed on the side of the box and immediately thought "a Doc Smith game?"

I asked the guy at the table "What's that?" and he said "If you buy something else you can have it for a dollar." So I bought a copy of Micro-Ancients and got Triplanetary for a buck, sight unseen, no idea what it was!

It's been one of the mainstays of my game closet ever since. It's what moved me to buy Traveller knowing no more about it that what I saw on the outside of the box.

Triplanetary makes a great "gateway drug" for getting Monopoly and Boggle players into "real" gaming, too. Run the race with them a couple of times, then say "You know, we could add missiles to the game if you feel like it..."

The rest will take care of itself.

I'm really looking forward to the SJG edition of Triplanetary.

Very sly :D

I think Triplanetary has been 'on the horizon' at SJG for over a decade. You (and I) may have a long wait :(
