Traveller Minutia

Um... So how does the discriminating Traveller keep his clothes clean? Is it some version of the agitating washer? Some sonic dirt blasting pulse? Or some unexplained "Jetson Technology" where you put soiled clothes in a slot and they pop out cleaned, pressed and wrapped in saran wrap.

Stain and biotic resistant clothing is a start.

But there must be a reason that a washer-dryer is part of the standard equipment of a stateroom. Probably for the less-tech clothing that you might want to keep.

Good suits could have a self cleaning system. A capillary system runs along with the fibers and you simply hook it up to a pressurized capsule of the cleaning solution and let it go. (use in a well ventilated area)

I use the Gravisonic Multivection 6000. One low power device that can cook to perfection any dish under computer control in less than a minute and then just as quick flash preserve it without any loss of flavor, texture or nutritive value. It can be maintained at the perfectly preserved level with a small battery and when you're hungry a push of a button will bring it right back to the just done state in as little time as it took to cook.

Mmm... Wouldn't most of these be preference? I mean, in my OWN kitchen, I have a microwave, a toaster oven, and an electric hot plate. Of course, I still cook 90% of my meals on a gas range, or better yet, a charcoal grill. Not because it's all I have, or it's the best I can get, I like the food better.

So... As for clothing, yes, you may be able to buy stain resistant, biotically inert clothing. And, you could probably also get real, 100%, natural, out-of-a-worms-butt silk. Just for the luxury of it.

As for food, well, most ships probably have microwaves (or equivalents), re-hydrators, and what-have-you, but there's also something to be said for chopping up some potatos and beef, wrapping it in the sheath-metal insulation from coolant lines and heating tossing it on top of the maneuver reactors for a few minutes to heat....

On several models of scout/courier, it is considered a sign of experience if the pilot knows which pumps in the engine room routinely get hot enough to cook a grilled cheese sandwich on.

Of course, everyone knows that the auxiliary hydrogen pump uses a microwave emitter and makes great popcorn (once certain safety devices are installed).

Hmmm.... where's that link about the IISS safety prohibition on grilling inside the ship?

And people wonder why second hand scout ships have a peculiar smell
