TNE FF&S 2 Munition design Installment 3

Afternoon (PST) all,

Does page 139 Step D. Damage Value 8 included a SM warhead as having no damage value?

Based on page 138 the details for Step A. Warhead Types 8: Sub-munitions indicate that the warhead can carry smaller HE, WP/IS, and HEAP warheads all of which have damage values calculated in Step D items 1 through 7 my answer is No.

Unfortunately I'm not sure so can someone giving me a hand on this one?

There is nothing that seems to limit submunitions to a particular type of warhead. Any of the types listed on pp. 135 through 138 could be used.

If you select a warhead type that has no damage (such as chaff) then the submunition would have no damage. Not saying that anyone would do this, but it is possible.

Thanks for the reply and you are right nothing in the rules limits the smaller warheads carried in an SM round. Of course I'm sticking with what are traditionally stuffed into to them.

Howdy all,

jec10 has been sending me PMs to answer my question about SM and Damage values.

The answer is unfortunately not in FF&S. You need the proper TNE rulebook to fully use submunitions. Pages 284-285 describe how they work and include a table on page 285 giving the characteristics of submunitions grenades.

My reply to the above was: Core rule book describes SM and FF&S the warhead falls under Rule D 8.

Yes, the problem is that in no place I can find are the "Light artillery", etc on the table on page 285 defined. So it isn't clear where the breakpoint is between light-medium-heavy artillery for the purposes of submunitions.

If you ever find out, please let me know.

I use Striker-2, so it isn't an issue because Striker-2 has completely different rules for submunitions which work just fine with the information you get from a FF&S design (i.e. you just need to know the burst size). But for roleplaying, you would need a bit more information. FF&S D 8 just doesn't give you anything.

Howdy jec10,

The area I found indicating anything about criteria for light, medium, or heavy is from FF&S Step C Warhead Diameter page 138 defines SM warheads as follows:

Light >= 10 cm < 15 cm
Medium >= 15 cm < 20 cm
Heavy >= 20 cm

My guess is that since CPR guns have bore sizes starting at 2 cm the range for artillery is as follows:

Light >= 2 cm < 15 cm
Medium >= 15 cm < 20 cm
Heavy >= 20 cm
