In one of my (YTU) Traveller sub-sectors, the sub-sector is almost completely surrounded by what I called the Void. The Void rips apart ships and kills any living thing caught in it. It comes in waves that sometime destroys the ships caught in it, but sometimes it brings in bits and pieces of alien technology and sometimes the bodies of strange creatures. There are ships that are crewed by Void Miners that mine the area along the Void. This is a dangerous occupation as being caught by a Void wave means sudden death. But the chance of rewards sometimes offsets the risk. One crew finding an unknown Jump 3 drive from the wreck of an alien ship. This drive may open the rest of the sub-sector up to exploration. The crew retired rich beyond what anyone could have imagined.
