The Ubiquitous "When" Request

Jetboy

SOC-1
Ok... it's Mid-May 2009. I understand that Marc wants this to be the best version ever, but there's a time you have to simply say "done" and release.

Do we have any idea of a firm release date yet?

Given the number of past dates that have come and gone, I think that someone has finally talked Marc into a policy more 'Avenger' - announce a date AFTER the work is done, so you have no doubts about 'meeting the deadline'.

A progress report would be nice. :)

That person would be Don McKinney, and that's exactly what he had to do.

A progress report would be nice. :)

In his own words, Marc is swamped.

That said, he is currently working through errata. Since March, I'd estimate that he's halfway done.

He's worked through errata for appx 10 chapters, including chargen, weapon design, vehicle design, and starship design. Of the remaining chapters, the one which requires the most review is personal combat, followed distantly by armor design and maybe starships, then a scad of little issues with the other remaining chapters.

My view, not Marc's.

Thanks for the update.
Is there still activity beyond the 'secret curtain' in the T5 section?

I know that you are discouraged from discussing SPECIFICS outside, but subjective data on the level of activity should be fair game.

Yes, there is activity. Personally, I'm quite happy about the amount of errata...

The "open issues pile" is 43 pages in size. That's my master open issues list, along with comments from the T5 Development Team (Marc/Rob/myself) on those issues. It's that big because I'm sort of OCD on errata (MT readers on CotI are aware of this problem).

The other problem is that Marc, Rob and I are self-distracting. And, we're filling in the gaps (ie, documents not already released).

Hmm... I'm getting close to a status update here, and that belongs inside the curtain.

And yes, I made Marc promise NO MORE DATES for everything (and I meant everything. The FASA CD, T5, the 2300AD revised CD, the CT revised CD, etc...), and he's kept to that.

Hey, we've met every date we've set since then...

This board really does need more smilieys.

I'll babble a bit.

Activity was extremely vigorous for two months after the CD was sent out, and in the last month has quieted down to a low, sustained level. Obvious and subtle errors, issues, and missing text were identified, pounced on, discussed, and noted in the appropriate errata thread, often with lists of suggested fixes and light midrash. Periodic sweeps by Don feed these errata into his piles of feedback.

I noticed an interesting side effect: We've had an iteration of some chapters already, and the people who join after the initial frenzy are very useful when these revisions get posted, because their fresh eyes can spot things that others may miss.

I noticed something else: almost without exception, discussion has been focused, polite and productive. It is a pleasure to discuss the material with them. I credit Don for this.

At this point, the group is saturated/sated and largely awaiting revisions, so the current low level of activity is in generating stuff: characters, worlds, weapons, armor, robots, vehicles, starships, aliens. In other words, "soak" testing the design systems, while building the things found in Traveller.

Thanks very much for the Update. It's nice to here that we're "almost" there... even if we're not quite sure when "there" is.

Please... keep us updated :)

Just an announcement of sorts...

I just volunteered via my wallet, to become a new fresh eye looking at the T5 material <g>. Now I need only wait for the CD to arrive.

In the meantime, I eagerly await what is to come...

Gracias... always good to have a fresh set of eyes.

In addition to the CD, the Playtest area also has somewhere around 64 starship designs, 4 major race/alien profiles, weapon designs, and at least 110 robots to evaluate and/or use.

I don't know if I qualify to view the playtest area. If I do, then I'll definitely take a look :)

If Marc has received your $$, then Don should be able to grant you playtest access immediately.

Well, the shrink-wrapped CD just arrived today. :) If neccessary, I suspect Don can check with Mr Miller himself to verify, or... I can describe any one page to Don in a test to prove I have any given file and can see the page number.

I look forward to seeing what is there...

:)

Since you have the CD, the easiest way to get access to the playtest material is to go to the Private Messages area, and on the far left side of the screen, click on the "Join Request" link, and select "Traveller5".

That will send me a message, and if I can match your CotI account's e-mail address with the e-mail address that ordered the CD (because Marc gives me those), then I can give you immediate access.

Otherwise, you'll get an e-mail from me telling you they don't match, and you'll need to send me the e-mail you ordered the CD with.

Then you'll be in.

Okie Dokie then. Sent the join request and gave both possible emails, as I wasn't entirely certain under which email addy I used to purchase the CD. Thank you everyone for your help and advice in this :)

Woulda?

At the Pragmatic Programmer site (http://www.pragprog.com/) they let you do advance purchases of books, sort of like the T5 CD; but purely electronic. When you find errors, you can post them to book errata (keyed to your copy), which lets the community help with errors. Sort of a neat approach, IMO.
