The planets alignment question

And despite those facts, Mal, hose rocks are so relatively UNspecial, that it leads a great many to say "Are they really from the moon? Or just antarctica?"

Likewise, the number of government coverups from the 40's, 50's, 60's, and even 70's is doing absolutely nothing to convince Joe Normal that the government can be trusted to say that the president is a human being. (Of course, there are doubts about that too, but that delves into politics...)

There are a tiny but significant and vocal minority who don't believe that the shuttle flies, a larger minority that believe the difficulties of the shuttle prove that Apollo spacecraft went up empty, and a larger group still who believe that the apollo program was faked in part. Even weirder, some of these people also believe that Roswell was an alien crash site.

That being said, it is possible, under basics of orbital mechanics, WITH SUFFICIENT AND REPEATED COLLISIONS, to alter the orbit. I can't refute that it's possible that they all lined up at some point. I can suggest that the probability has a 1x10^X, where X is a very high magnitude negative number, probably well more than six places.

The total energy input to get 1m/s of vector change on a planet is a mind numbing figure. 1E20 N or more, as I recall..

Gathering that without traumatic failure of planetary integrity requires numerous aligned smaller not-too-fast-nor-slow impacts, or a preponderance of impacts in alignment.

Possible, but not plausible.

Well of course the moon rocks are UNspecial because they DID come from Antarctica! After being blasted into orbit by a collision with some big wandering rock way back ;)

Nothing sells better than a conspiracy theory. Wait, actually sex does sell better than a conspiracy theory
And of course the best story is a sex and conspiracy theory :D

Well, on the one hand we have reality. On the other, we have stupid people
. I don't care for what stupid people think, I only care about reality
.

And Dan, while some moon rocks have been found in Antarctica, I think more Mars rocks have come from there, for precisely the reason you state - they got blown off Mars by an impact and ended up on Earth. They fall anywhere on the planet, but are most noticeable in Antarctica (and on any permanent ice sheet, for that matter) because the rocks stand out against the ice they're lying on.

I've held one of these Mars meteorites. It's a very weird feeling, holding a bit of another planet... ;)

Aha! So those acids came from your sweaty hands!
[/QB]</font>[/QUOTE]I was assured that it wasn't an important one

That said, I did see ALH 840001 - the mars meteorite with the supposed microfossils in - at a planetary science conference a year before it became famous. But that was in an sealed, airtight glass case.
