I can't help but be reminded of the Sayat MHR I cooked up for the TML back in the late '90s.
I think someone even contacted me about including them in the GURPS line (their online JTAS? the 'Humaniti' book?) but I assumed they were kidding. Hell, I was kidding.
Their 'origin story' was left unclear, but the version I was leaning towards is that they were the product not of Ancient tinkering, but Hiver tinkering. Or at least, the Hivers were the most recent power to tinker with them -- perhaps they were an actual Ancient-deposited MHR originally; maybe a lost early colony of Solomani gene-mods...
