The Daughters of Epona

Chaos

SOC-12
Here is a minor human species I have come up with for my Terran Alliance ATU. They call themselves after Epona, the Celtic goddess of war, and they are my take on how to include the idea of Amazons in an SF universe in a mature way.

The Daughters of Epona were created several centuries ago by (female) human scientists seeking to eliminate the wastefulness of sexual reproduction in an age in which it is no longer needed because natural selection, the driving force of evolution, is no longer really taking place. (By that I mean that modern medicine and the social contract of human societies counteract most selection pressure, to the point where artificial selection, and artificial modification of the genetic code, by far outweighs the influence any natural processes)
The result is a species composed entirely of women (although, purely technically speaking, I don´t think the term "women" is correct for describing an essentially asexual species). Reproduction takes place in one of two ways:
The first, and simplest way, consists in administering certain hormones which will trigger ovulation (the Daughters do not naturally ovulate); since the ovum is grown essentially already fertilized, it will always try to implant, which is no more and no less likely to succeed than with "standard" human women. The child that results from this is a clone (except for minor copying errors in the genome which always occur) of her mother.
The second way is more complicated, and in the Daughters´ society is reserved to the semi-permanent couples called "lifemates". One ovum is taken from each partner, and the ova are melded to create two ova whose genetic material is mix of that of both parents; even though the two children are called "twins" in Daughter society, they are, by definition, as far apart genetically as two full siblings could possibly be, since each has inherited exactly those genes the other did not inherit. The "mixed" ova resulting from the melding process can be implanted in either or both mothers, but are usually gestated in vitro, since that is by far the safer and easier way to reproduce, compared to the natural way; also, Daughter society is largely based in space and in hostile environments, the effects of late-term pregnancy do not mix well with the wearing of tailored vac suits, to say nothing of the effect of toxins and radiation on unborn children.
The melding process, and of course committing to a "lifemate" partnership in first place, is by far the preferred way of reproduction; in fact, the simple hormone-induced reproduction is viewed with a mild stigma in most of Daughter society - sort of a mix between the way our society by and large views unmarried single mothers, and seeing such a thing as an admission that one is unable to find a partner.

Of course, the radically altered (to say the least) way of reproduction also has its repercussions for Daughter society. The friction between the sexes is, naturally, gone, although complications caused by love or jealousy are not. By the way, Daughters can, and many of them do, have sex, the same as "standard" human women, and they tend to enjoy it, too, however since it has nothing to do with reproduction, it is not nearly the driving force that is it for "standard" humans - sex is fun for them, but no more than any other form of physical work-out, and the way "standard" men react to it is kind of annoying to them. The interaction between Daughters and "standard" humans where flirtation and innuendo are in the air can be fun for the casual observer... let´s leave it at that. ;-)

The main intention behind this was, as I said, to integrate Amazons into an SF universe, and to do so in a way that does not scream "teenage boy who needs to get laid". (Although, there is that tiny, immature part of my brain that keeps saying "why not?" :-D)

I´m not finished wrapping my mind about all the implications, either, and would appreciate hearing any thoughts you might have on this.

I just wanted to add that, with a small modification, the Daughters would also work as a minor human species seeded by the ancients or their equivalent.

For this to work, something on their new homeworld, something that would reasonably be part of their diet, would have to contain the substance that triggers ovulation. I expect that, reasonably soon, they would figure out the causal relationship between consumption of that... well, let´s make it an apple... and reproduction. In pre-scientific times I would expect their society to believe that one gets pregnant directly be eating these apples. They might even come tothink that babies germinate from apple seeds - plant them in soil, and an apple tree results; planet them in your tummy, and a baby results. People used to believe dumber stuff than that.

I would definitely go with the Ancients angle... the other option brings to mind creepy, nerdy scientist types in their labs making the "perfect woman" with Weird Science music in the background.

What? No Femputer? No snoo snoo? No Zapp Branigan quotes? "We need rest. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised."

You seriously need to rethink this, Chaos ;)

All kidding aside, it's an interesting concept although Amazons did take mates, forcibly. Maybe you could have them attacking out of a nebula somewhere to take male slaves for purposes of reproduction only; did you ever see "A Boy and His Dog"?. The "Boy" was captured by a band of post-holocaust wastelanders who needed him solely for his, ah, ... genetic material using only the most clinical of methods to collect it; not his idea of fun.

Not creepy, nerdy scientists (which would be the adult version of the "teenage boy who needs to get laid") - cold, efficient scientists, or maybe jaded feminist scientists. The whole project was about removing the unnecessary element - us guys - from reproduction, not providing guys with something to drool over. These Amazons never get horny, and they probably aren´t particularly good at sex, either - lack of practice, if nothing else.

@Ran Targas:
The whole "tribe ruled by women" thing, including, and perhaps especially, the "taking mates by force" angle, was invented by the Herodotus - who among other things can be considered the middle-aged lecher version of the "teenage boy who needs to get laid". He was from an extremely patriarchal, mysogynistic society (ancient Athenians could have given the Taliban advice in that area), and he´d heard stories about nomadic tribes in which the women sometimes fight alongside their men (the Scythians and their successors, the Sarmatians) - so he cooked up the Amazon story.

Sounds like a reverse of the story White Plague.

Not at all... they didn´t wipe anyone out. They merely created an alternative way of living. To paraphrase the old disclaimer: "No male individuals were harmed in the creation of this species".

By the way, I have decided to have them switch their "patron" to Selene.

First of all, they are nowhere near as barbaric as the mythical Amazons, so I figure that a deity from a civilized culture´s pantheon is more fitting.
Second, Selene was considered the goddess of the moon, which could plausibly be reinterpreted as her being in charge of all hostile environments - not a bad patron for a culture that consists largely of belters and spacefarers.

I think I read something similar in National Geographic or some such. The researchers found red-heads with European features in the steppes of Central Asia, maybe Mongolia, where they shouldn't be. The genetic tests pointed toward Macedonia and the Balkans as the origin. Of course, the Greeks were the same people who constructed centaurs, fawns, and sphinx from traveler's tales and old bones so creating warrior women who mangled themselves to better fire a bow is probably not too much of a stretch.

Still, we are now so far from the events that probably gave birth to the legends that telling fact from fiction is nearly impossible. The male dominated societies of Greece were most likely scarred to death of women as warlike as they were.

But back to your concept; I do like the idea. Having women who totally reject men could make it even more interesting, IMHO, perhaps seeing men as the cause of a great many of society's woes. It would set a definitive tone for the game.

I actually had been thinking of doing a version of the early scientists of this for a (now-defunct) PBP game here, but hadn't thought about how I could.

Bio-Mods

Solomani would be the likely source of genetic modifications. They, especially Terrans have the most data on such and no problem with using it (except what Imperium has tried to psycho-history on them) while the other minors, Vil's & Zho's lack data and have ingrained fears of such.

If someone used the idea in standard TRAV settings.

Sorry, but all I can think of when I read the thread title is this...

Epona, the Gallo-Roman Goddess of horses*

Thus, her daughters would be mares.

And the genetic tinkering would be to produce a race of true centaurs... as in the Greek mythological beast!

I'm glad you switched to Selene.

Allow me to bump this thread. The daughters are going to be in the upcoming PBP game I´m running, if perhaps only as background.

Chaos,

I quite like the idea and would not use the Ancients angle as it's been used far too often by publishers and hobbyists alike.

Are you familiar with the author Lois McMaster Bujold? She penned the Vorkosigan series among others and is one of my favorites. In the Vor setting she has something similar to your Epona but with men. The book is called Ethan of Athos.

Andros is a male only society which as colonized a world very distant and deliberately so from the human colonized portion of the wormhole nexus. While cloning and raising fetuses outside of a human body are routine in Bujold's setting, the men of Andros still require human eggs for well-founded genetic diversity reasons and so import human ovaries. The novel deals with the events when a shipment of new ovaries goes awry.

Having you Eponan society require sperm and/or testicles for the same reasons would be a nice touch. Collecting and storing sperm for long periods are trivial tasks compared to collecting eggs, so Epona should have an easier time of it than Andros.

Bill

Have you read Stephen Baxter's Destiny's Child series?

There's an interesting nearly all female hive that evolves from time to time - although males are still needed for the obvious reason.

I'll second Bill's suggestion of Ethan of Athos - great author, interesting premise, good book.

You might also take a look at David Brin's Glory Season. The world Brin lays out has a some similarities with what you proposed in your initial post, though different in many ways. (And definitely fits the "We're not in Kansas anymore" test.) It's a matriarchal society, built from genetically modified humans, dominated by families of female clones reproduced via parthenogenesis - which still requires the interaction of males to "spark" the process during the planet's winter. (Male children and non-clone female children are born of summer unions.)

It's one of Brin's best books, and like the best SF, presents both the good and bad of this world. Worth reading.

Two books that I can recommend are "Virgin Planet" by Poul Anderson and "Amazon Planet" by Mack Reynolds, both of them different takes on the all-female (Anderson) and female-dominate (Reynolds) society.

Also "Spartan Planet" by A. Bertram Chandler, a take on the all-male society.

Minor nit; that would be "Ethan of Athos", as you've (correctly) linked to, not "...Andros", as you wrote.
