I just noticed this at rpgnet:
News Update 16 Feb 2006: It's now confirmed that the new, updated TTA book should be in the shops in June 2006, with the RPG to follow in the summer. The new book will expand on the original, with a more cohesive backstory and timeline of the Proxima War along with more details on who and what the Proximan's and Alphans are. The new book and RPG will be published by Morrigan Press, makers of quality Role Playing Games.

I'm certainly looking forward to June! Unfortunately, the site doesn't say any more about content. I'm wondering if it's going to combine the previous four books, or be something completely new.

The RPG sounds interesting.

Still reading through some of these posts...still leaves me confused is it based on Traveller Era of the Dawn stage of the Long Night or is it a separate RPG.

Even a reprint for our younger viewers would be good. This series of books really cemented my adoration of science fiction as a lad. Even passed on, many years later, today's CG artists could benefit from a serious look at his stuff.

Before Elson, the common perception of spaceship was white, silver, etc... a visionary he was.

OMG, I think I just wet myself

Totally not interested in the RPG side of it, but definitely will pick it up for nostalgia and to see all the old piccies done in CG. From the looks of it they've done a very good job in keeping the CG versions close to the originals (the Gourmet pic must have been a bugger to do).

I still have the Spacecraft and Spacewreck books here with me
.

What the hell is it? I've never heard of it!

And why are they replacing perfectly good Foss-style art with crap CGI? (and what I've seen on the website so far is crap).

I'm wondering about the legality of making CGI art from another artist's imagery. Doesn't that constitute a copyright violation?

I also agree with Scarecrow and the Baron. One of the reasons that I like Peter Elson's artwork is that he created that incredible detail with obvious brushstrokes - no simple feat. I'm not an expert, but it looks like he used oil paints.

It's not related to Traveller at all.

Reading through the rpgnet posts, the rpg is going to be based on the Omni system - whatever that is

Well, that sucks! Especially, when there were such nice ships...maybe, I could co-opt for the same time period or Marc could sue for copyright infringement...and have them make it Traveller compaciable...

You're a Brit and you've never heard of the TTA? Shame on you! I think I got mine back in the day when Marks and Sparks still had their own 'St Michael' book line
.

Have a look at this:

And with all due respect, the CG art is damn near perfect compared to the originals. Some are the original ships in new scenes, but others (like the Cutlass and Cyclops) are identical to the original. And that is good enough for me. And I think it's a better option that someone trying to traditionally fake a Chris Foss type style.

Me, I love the new Shark pic

guilty and proud of it! :D

for you young uns': the TTA series of books was a series of books printed back in the 70's in which a gentleman named stewart cowley took a large series of SF paintings by various artists (these paintings were typically from SF paperback covers) and wrote a series of stories around them.

the stories were not always scientifically accurate and mr. cowley was limited by the fact that his stories had to align with the pictures. but for a group of newfound SF fans (courtesy of 'star wars') they were a godsend.

i had the first two books until they were destroyed in a flood in the 90's. i replaced them with 'starbase 2000' which was the first two books bound together and i was finally (after a 25 year search...) able to get my hands on 'spacewreck' last year. all hail the 'half price books' store! i read the fourth book about starliners and wasn't as impressed with it.

i still break out the books i have to read to my kids.

here's another one for y'all. a guy named steven caldwell wrote a series of half-a-dozen books along the same lines as cowley's. there was even a certain amount of 'crossover' (or rip-offs, if you're not feeling polite. ;) ) in the series. alphans, proximans, and the criminal organization capella nero were all there.
