Task Resolution

Melkor

SOC-4
Hi folks,

I just got a copy of the MegaTraveller boxed set, and am looking to start a campaign.

In reading through Task Resolution, it looks to me like the skill level and characteristic listed are BOTH applied as DMs to the roll (the characteristic being divided by 5 with fractions dropped).

Is this correct, or do you only use the characteristic if a character does not possess the proper skill ?

Also, when a character doesn't posess the skill, but the skill does state "Unskilled OK" is there a penalty for attempting to use the skill without possessing it ?

Thanks!

Both the charecteristic and the skill are applied. When it says "unskilled OK' there is no penelty for being unskilled.

Thanks for the response.

If the skill doesn't say 'Unskilled OK', does that mean that the character absolutely cannot attempt the skill, or does it mean that the character can try, but get's a penalty ?

If it's the latter, what is the penalty ?

If a character attempts a task which he hasn't got the required skill for then the difficulty is raised by one level.

So what would you do in the case of a Task where there was no skill involved, only a characteristic ?

Would you double the characteristic DM ?

Would you pick two characteristics and apply the DM from both added together ?

If only one characteristic is involved then yes, double its DM.

Some tasks could get DMs from 2 characteristics rather than a characteristic and a skill.

Just to clarify: you only double a lone att if there is no other asset listed.

So for "Difficult, Str. 10m." yes, you would double.
For "Difficult, Str, Dex. 10m" no, no doubling.
For "Difficult, Str, Sword. 10m." No, no doubling.

Note that Determination tasks do not get doubled...
